KANSAS CITY ROYALS PROSPECT
MARK TEAHEN TO GREET AREA YOUTH

Rising Stari With Local Roots Supports
Hall's Outreach Program

St. Marys – Kansas City Royals rising star Mark Teahen, a slugging third baseman with St. Marys roots, was a first round draft pick in 2002 and is catapulting through the minor leagues.  He'll be at the Hall of Fame's administrative office at 140 Queen St. E. on Monday, December 20, from Noon to 1:00PM to meet and greet any youngsters who wish to shake hands with the next Canadian likely to make it to the Major Leagues.

As this event is part of the Ball Hall's Outreach Program, there will be no charge, and area youth are welcome and encouraged to ask for autographs, ask questions and have photos taken (bring your own camera).

Teahen, the nephew of St. Marys Town Councillor Gerry Teahen, just completed an outstanding season in the Arizona Fall League where each Major League club sends its top six prospects.  Not only did he bat .385 and finish at or near the top of all offensive categories, but Teahen was also named the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award, given to the player chosen by his peers and coaches for demonstrating the qualities that Stenson brough to the ballpark every day.  Teahen was chosen because he is unselfish, hard-working and displayed tremendous leadership.

Great guy. Great bat. And he can flash the leather too. Teahen, who was traded to the Royals in the three-team deal that sent phenom Carlos Beltran to Houston, was named best defensive third baseman in the 2004 Texas League and Pacific Coast League by Baseball America.

You could say that Mark Teahen is a chip off the old block, as his father Mike (Gerry's brother), was a rather accomplished athlete himself.  Mike Teahen, who was born and raised on a farm in Downie Township, played for Team Canada and was later drafted by the Montreal Expos.  He married Martha Jackson, the sister of Stratford Hiller import Tom Jackson, and they currently reside in California.  Mark has a pair of brothers, Matthew and Mick, who are both excellent players as well.  Mark's baseball ties don't end there - his uncle Tom is a director with the Hall of Fame.
