St. Marys Tryouts for the new St. Marys entries into the Premier Baseball League of Ontario continue this weekend. Several players were unable to attend last Saturday's initial tryout camp due to numerous provincial playoffs, so the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame has scheduled a pair of workouts for this coming Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11 & 12, from 12:00-3:00 PM at St. Marys Cement Company Field.
Players interested in both the 18 & under squad, as well as the 16 & under team, are encouraged to attend both days, and will practice together under head coaches Bill Wilkinson and Shawn Lynn. Eligibility is determined by the player's age on August 1, 2005.
"While the Premier League is designed for elite players, we encourage all interested players to come out and have a look," said GM Bill Maksinuk. "Our role is to take the raw, athletic player with projectable tools and develop his potential to the point where scholarships become a possibility in his life, or maybe even the Major League draft."
In addition to 60-game schedules for the clubs, the Hall of Fame is intending on hosting five tournaments in 2005, which should bring a total of more than 100 teams to St. Marys that otherwise would not be here. Museum visitations and other activities in town will coincide with the event schedules.
Players interested in trying out should come prepared to work out and bring their own gear. There are no geographic boundaries for eligibility. There will be a $20 charge to participate in the Fall workouts. Registration will take place at the St. Marys Cement Company Field prior to Saturday's practice. More information regarding eligibility, scheduling and fees will be distributed at that time.
