St. Marys - When Canada needed a boost against the heavily-favoured USA in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006, it was Londoner Adam Stern who came to the rescue, virtually single-handedly slaying the Americans with a triple, an inside-the-park homerun and a single, four runs batted in, and three highlight-reel catches in center field. Now, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame's museum needs a boost, as the outside of the century-old building needs restoration to the tune of approximately five thousand dollars, and Stern is donning the Superman cape again. Stern, along with fellow Olympian Chris Robinson, will speak about their experience in Beijing on Sunday, October 26th at the St. Marys Golf & Country Club. The time of the event has been changed to 6:00pm, as Stern's indoor baseball training facility in London is having its grand opening that same afternoon. Robinson is assisting in the opening as well. Robinson, a native of Dorchester, was Team Canada's catcher and led Canada at the plate with a .313 batting average, playing in six of Canada's seven games. He also played errorless defense and was a welcome right-handed bat in Canada's left-handed dominated line-up. Stern was Team Canada's center fielder for all seven of its games, playing sparkling defense without an error, and chipping in with four hits including a pair of triples and three RBI. His four runs were second-most on the team. Stern and Robinson will join host Tom Valcke, the Hall's president & CEO, who was the Technical Commissioner of baseball in the 2008 Olympic Summer Games. Valcke oversaw all 32 of the tournament's games. A wonderful Silent Auction will take place, finger foods will be served with punch and the athletes will be available for autographs and photos. Tickets are twenty dollars and all of the proceeds will be donated towards the museum restoration project. There will be a powerpoint presentation with some wonderful photo shots, and a question and answer period will follow. Tickets are available from the Hall's downtown administrative office at 140 Queen St. E., or from any St. Marys Rotary Club member. ST.
