After naming the 26-year-old as his starting shortstop in mid-July, BLUE JAYS Manager CARLOS TOSCA said, "He's got a high ceiling. He could be our shortstop for a long time. If you look at his numbers in the minors, he had a good home run ratio per at-bat. He's got a lot of power. He stepped it up and he's playing outstanding for us. The kid had a great night. Unfortunately, it was in a losing cause." Having never hit more than 13 homers in a season at any level working his way up through the minors, Woodward was slated to be the backup to FELIPE LOPEZ, but he struggled and had recently been sent down to the Triple-AAA SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS. "We lost. "I'm still trying to figure out how we could've won that game," Woodward said. "That's what we play the game for. It's great to hit three home runs in a game, but if you don't win, then you really didn't accomplish what you set out to do." The first homer came in the fifth inning, which tied the game at 1-1. The second came in the seventh, giving his BLUE JAYS a short-lived lead and the third came in the bottom of the ninth, but was not enough to pull out the win. 8-07 CALGARY CANNONS (PCL) SS KEVIN HOOPER hit safely in his 21st straight game as his team fell to the EDMONTON TRAPPERS, 7-6. It was an emotional evening for Gillick, who was an original employee from 1976 through 1994, and who still makes his permanent home in Toronto. At the press conference to announce his induction, his eyes welled up, and his voice wavered as he stated, "You get older, I don't know if you get sentimental or what, but there were so many people involved in building the club, and it doesn't seem proper that I'm getting the recognition, but in some ways I feel uncomfortable with it because there were so many people who were involved with this organization that made a contribution."
