6-01 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MID) RHP DON LEVINSKI threw seven solid innings and struck out 12 batters for the second time in his last three starts to help his squad down the FORT WAYNE WIZARDS, 6-4. The 19-year-old fanned the side in the first, third and fifth innings and is tied for the most strikeouts in the MIDWEST LEAGUE with 72. He yielded two runs, one earned, and four hits with a walk to raise his record to 6-3.
6-01 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) 1B TODD SEARS went 5-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI, four runs scored and a walk, and OF MIKE RYAN homered and tied a career-high with six RBI in their 21-5 pounding of the CALGARY CANNONS. Sears cracked a solo shot in the second inning, singled in both the fourth and sixth frames, drilled a two-run blast in his second at-bat of the sixth, for his forth career multi-homer game, and singled and scored again in the eighth. The 26-year-old is fourth in the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE in batting (.337) and hits (66) and is ranked fifth in RBI (44). Ryan doubled home a pair of runs in a nine-run second inning, crushed a three-run blast in the sixth and singled home a run in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old, selected by the MINNESOTA TWINS in the fifth round of the 1996 draft, is batting .289 with 56 hits, 48 RBI and league-leading 16 home runs over 47 games. 6-02 NEW ORLEANS ZEPHYRS (PCL) RHP PETE MUNRO pitched seven scoreless innings allowing an unearned run, two hits, two walks and fanned six batters to pick up the 2-1 win over the MEMPHIS REDBIRDS. The 26-year-old issued a walk to lead off the contest, then retired the next 10 batters and 18 of 22 through six innings, improving his record to 5-1 with a 2.48 ERA over nine starts. He struck out two in both the third and sixth innings to give him 57 over 65.1 innings for the season. 6-02 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) C JOSH PHELPS homered in his third consecutive game to help his team edge the RICHMOND BRAVES, 2-1. He drilled a solo home run in the third inning for an early 1-0 lead. The 24-year-old who is bating .293 with 54 hits in 50 games, is leading the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE in home runs (18), extra-base hits (33) and slugging percentage (.674) and is second-best with 45 RBI. 6-02 TENNESSEE SMOKIES (SL) RHP VINNY CHULK won his fifth straight start in their 8-3 victory at the BIRMINGHAM BARONS. Chulk allowed two earned runs and eight hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks issued over eight innings to improve to 6-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 10 starts. The 23-year-old set down six in a row between the second and third innings and retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced. C KEVIN CASH smacked a three-run double in the first inning and doubled home a run in the second for the winners. The 24-year-old is batting .281 with 59 hits, 44 RBI, 37 runs and 34 walks through 54 games. 6-03 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) OF MICHAEL RESTOVICH homered with a season-high five RBI in their 13-11 triumph over the CALGARY CANNONS in the second game of their doubleheader. The 23-year-old crushed a three-run shot in the fifth inning and smacked a two-out, two-run double in the sixth that gave them a 12-9 lead. He is currently hitting .308 with 64 hits, 119 total bases, 41 RBI and 40 runs scored through 56 games. 6-03 13-3 rout over the BIRMINGHAM BARONS. The 22-year-old crushed a three-run homer in the second inning and singled home a pair of runs in the third to cap his highest run production of the season. The switch-hitter is batting .282 with 61 hits, 30 RBI, 37 runs and 34 walks in 56 games. RHP PETE BAUER pitched the second complete games of the season, and of his career, winning them both, for he victors. The 23-year-old improved to 2-6 with a 2.88 ERA in 12 starts with 39 strikeouts and just 19 walks over a league-leading 81 innings. 6-04 BUFFALO BISONS (IL) OF JEREMY WARE went 3-for-5 with five RBI in a 12-0 rout at the COLUMBUS CLIPPERS. After ending a four-run first inning by grounding into a double play, he laced an RBI single in the third and connected on a grand slam in the fifth. 6-04 LOUISVILLE BATS (IL) OF KEVIN WITT drove home five runs in their 9-1 triumph at the TOLEDO MUD HENS. Witt drilled a three-run homer in the third inning, his 12th longball of the season, and added a two-run double in the ninth. The 6'4", 210-pounder, who has averaged 76 RBI over his last three seasons, leads the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE at the moment with 51. 6-05 - DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS (FSL) 3B SIMON POND finished 4-for-5 with two triples and four RBI in a 10-4 triumph over the LAKELAND TIGERS. He doubled home a run in the third inning, had an RBI single in the fourth and tripled and scored in the seventh inning. In the eighth, the Canadian-born infielder ripped a two-run triple to complete the scoring. The 25-year-old, who leads the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE with 63 RBI in 60 games, has five games this season with four or more runs knocked in. OF JUSTIN SINGLETON chipped in a pair of triples, two RBI and two runs scored for the BLUE JAYS. 6-06 TENNESSEE SMOKIES (SL) SS DANNY SOLANO homered and collected five RBI and OF DEWAYNE WISE went 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBI in their 16-11 victory over the CAROLINA MUDCATS. Solano singled and scored in his first at-bat of the sixth inning and capped the eight-run frame with a grand slam in his second at-bat. He also added a run-scoring single in the eighth. The 23-year-old, was 6-08 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) OF MICHAEL CUDDYER homered in his fourth consecutive game to help his team defeat the PORTLAND BEAVERS, 8-6. He crushed a three-run blast in the first inning to extend his streak and drew three walks inb the contest. Selected ninth overall by the MINNESOTA TWINS in the 1997 draft, the 23-year-old is batting .333 with 58 hits, good for 110 total bases, 27 RBI and 41 runs scored through 46 games. 6-10 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) RHP JUAN RINCON tossed a three-hit complete game to lead his squad to a 5-1 victory over the FRESNO GRIZZLIES, yielding a run, a walk and struck out two batters in his third complete game of the season and the eighth of his six-year career. The 23-year-old retired 18 of the first 19 hitters through seven innings and eight of the final nine, including 19 groundballs, to improve to 4-3 with a 5.35 ERA over 11 starts. 6-10 OTTAWA LYNX (IL) RHP JULIO MANON spun a two-hit complete game in their 3-1 win at the CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS, in the second game of a doubleheader. Manon yielded an unearned run, two walks and struck out six for the win, improving to 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA. The 28-year-old retired 13 of the first 16 batters and the final seven in order in his second complete game of the season and fifth of his career. 6-12 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MID) 3B NICK SCHNABEL went 2-for-4 with an RBI for his team in a 4-1 loss to the LANSING LUGNUTS, suffering their ninth consecutive defeat. The 5'9", 170-pound infielder tripled home a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the winners lead to 3-1 and was the only player on his team to record a hit beyond the third inning when he singled in the eighth. Clinton has dropped five straight at home during its current skid and has just one victory in its last 14 games. 6-08 So how did the CHICAGO WHITE SOX celebrate the MONTREAL EXPOS first ( and possibly last ) visit to COMISKEY PARK? They scheduled a SLEEPOVER NIGHT. If a fan buys a special ticket, they could see the Saturday night game and stay overnight for the Sunday afternoon game, camping out on the outfield grass. There even were plans for a midnight showing of a popular baseball movie on the Jumbotron. 6-10 BOWIE BAYSOX (EL) LHP ERIK BEDARD spun seven scoreless innings to win his third start in their 2-1 victory over the NEW HAVEN RAVENS. He scattered four hits, two walks and struck out four in the win, improving to 5-2 and lowering his ERA to 1.80 over nine starts. The 23-year-old native of Quebec retired eight of the first nine batters and the final seven he faced in order, striking out two in the sixth inning, to raise his season total to 50 over 50 innings. Bedard, who has allowed only 30 hits and no home runs so far this season, extended his current scoreless streak to 17.2 innings. 6-11 Former major league stars PAUL MOLITOR, who won the 1993 World Series while playing for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, and DAVE CONCEPCION, the slick-fielding shortstop in the CINCINNATI REDS era known as the BIG RED MACHINE, were named as the managers for the All-Star Futures Game in Milwaukee on July 7. Molitor will manage the United States squad while Concepcion will skipper the World team. The annual Futures Game features and showcases the best American and International minor league prospects. Molitor, a seven-time All-Star, finished his career with the MINNESOTA TWINS, amassing 3,319 hits. 6-12 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) RHP DOUG BOCHTLER tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts to help his team defeat the FRESNO GRIZZLIES, 9-1. Bochtler yielded a run and six hits, without issuing a walk in his first complete game since 1994, while he was with the LAS VEGAS STARS. The 31-year-old retired 20 of 23 batters through seven innings, fanned two in the first, fifth and eighth frames, inducing 10 flyouts to record his 15th complete game in his 14th professional season. The West Palm Beach, Florida, native improved to 4-1 in six starts with a 3.28 ERA over 35.2 innings. 6-16 Former BLUE JAYS OF SHAWN GREEN doesn't get the same attention showered on the top sluggers of the game, but he's showing he can hit homers with the best of them. Green, who tied a big league record on May 23 with four homers in one game, equalled another on June 15 with home runs in four consecutive plate appearances over two days. "The last thing I want to think about is hitting home runs, because when I do, that's when I get into trouble," Green said. "But at the same time, I love getting into a home run groove, just like anybody else. The difference is that I've got into a lot more intense home run streaks and they're coming in larger bunches." The Baseball Hall of Fame called and asked for the final bat used when Green launched nine homers last month, the last of which pushed him past eight others who had homered six times in three consecutive games. One problem: Green didn't get the message until after he cracked his favorite piece of lumber near the handle, while hitting his second homer of the night on Saturday (May 25) in Arizona. "It died a hero," he said. "Any pieces, anything that I've used that gets into the Hall of Fame is a thrill. 6-16 OMAHA ROYALS (PCL) OF AARON GUIEL went 4-for-4 with a home run, 4 RBI and 3 runs, to help his team edge the TACOMA RAINIERS, 9-8, singled in the fourth and sixth innings, then drew a two-out walk in the seventh, launching a grand slam that capped a five-run eighth for a 9-7 lead. The 29-year-old Canadian-born outfielder has driven in a run in nine of his last 10 games, has 10 multi-RBI contests and four four-RBI games so far this season. A Canadian, he is hitting .356 with 73 hits, 46 RBI, and 42 runs over 58 games. 6-18 JOHNSON CITY CARDINALS (APP) OF MATT LEMANCZYK finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored in his professional debut in his team's 7-6 win over the ELIZABETHTON TWINS in 10 innings. A 10th-round selection of the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS out of Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, homered in his second at-bat of the contest in the third, drawing a walk and scoring in the fifth and singled, swiped second base and scored in the seventh. The 21-year-old son of RHP DAVE LEMANCZYK tied the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double. 6-18 BUFFALO BISONS (IL) C TIM LAKER homered with four RBI to help his group defeat the TOLEDO MUD HENS , 8-2, extending their winning streak to nine games. Laker singled home a run in the fifth inning then crushed a three-run home run in the sixth and has 10 hits, two homers and 10 RBI in his last 14 games. 6-18 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) LHP CLIFF LEE struck out 10 batters to help his side edge the ERIE SEAWOLVES, 3-2. LEE yielded a run, three hits and a walk over seven innings, struck out four of the first five batters he faced, retired 15 of the first 17 over five hitless frames and fanned a pair in both the fifth and seventh innings for a league-leading 98 K's over 81.2 innings. Lee was third in the Class-A FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE last season in strikeouts (129) and first in SO/9 IP (10.53), was a fourth-round selection of the MONTREAL EXPOS in the 2000 draft and in his first season of Class-AA ball. 6-18 MEDICINE HAT BLUE JAYS (PIO) C DAVID CORRENTE homered twice and drove in four runs in their 6-5 triumph over the BILLINGS MUSTANGS. Corrente singled home a run in the first inning, connected on a solo shot in the third and added a two-run blast in the fifth. A resident of Chatham, Ontario, the 18-year-old hit just .192 with a home run and six RBI in 35 games with Medicine Hat last season. 6-19 NEW ORLEANS ZEPHYRS (PCL) RHP PETE MUNRO spun a two-hit shutout in their 3-0 victory over the PORTLAND BEAVERS. Munro, who carried a no-hitter over 6.1 innings, issued a walk to open the contest, hit a pair of batters and fanned four in his fourth career shutout and seventh complete game, retiring 17 of the first 19 batters he faced, including 11 straight between the first and fourth frames, before yielding a base hit in the seventh. In eighteen outings Munro has won seven straight decisions, improving to 7-1 with a 2.47 ERA overall, allowing 65 hits and striking out 70 batsmen through 87.1 innings with his team. 6-19 OGDEN RAPTORS (PIO) 1B PRINCE FIELDER went 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in his professional debut, in their 12-9 victory over the IDAHO FALLS PADRES in 10 innings. Fielder,the seventh overall pick in the recent draft and the son of former AMERICAN LEAGUE home run champion CECIL FIELDER, laced an RBI single in the first inning, drew a walk in the fifth and tied the score at 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth with a grand slam. CECIL FIELDER had debuted in the PIONEER LEAGUE with the BUTTE COPPER KINGS in 1982, hiting .322 with 20 home runs, 68 runs batted in, 37 walks and a slugging percentage of .645 in 69 games. 6-19 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) OF MIKE RYAN belted his 21st home run for his squad, tying him with SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS C JOSH PHELPS for the minor league lead, in their 9-6 win over the MEMPHIS REDBIRDS. 6-19 PAWTUCKET RED SOX (IL) OF JEFF ABBOTT hit a pair of home runs to lift his team over the SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS, 4-3, in 14 innings, ending a no-hit performance by RHP MIKE SMITH with a leadoff home run in the sixth and snapped a 3-3 tie with a solo shot in the top of the 14th, giving his side the lead for good. Smith had retired 22 of the 28 batters he faced, yielding a solo homer, four walks and hitting a batter over nine innings, but received a no-decision. 6-20 OTTAWA LYNX (IL) LHP MATT BLANK tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader at the SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS, 4-0. Blank, who had been winless over his last six starts, issued a walk and allowed only one runner to reach second base over seven innings for the win. He retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced to notch his first win since 12 May. In the second game, 3B JOSH KLIMEK finished 2-for-2 with a homer and four RBI as his side earned a split of the twinbill, 9-6. 6-19 "I was a goalie, Can't you tell ? You think these are my teeth ?" COLORADO ROCKIES OF LARRY WALKER, when asked what position he played in hockey growing up in British Columbia. 6-21 AUBURN DOUBLEDAYS (NYP) SS RUSS ADAMS went 4-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs to help his team defeat the JAMESTOWN JAMMERS, 7-3. Adams, the 14th overall selection of the TORONTO BLUE JAYS in this year's draft, laced a triple in the top of the first inning, singled in the third and hit a run-scoring double in the fifth. The 21-year-old drew a bases-on-balls and scored to highlight a four-run eighth and singled home a run in the ninth inning. The University of North Carolina graduate, hit .370 with 94 hits, seven homers, 55 RBI, 75 runs scored and 52 walks in 63 games for his TAR HEELS. Named the top prospect in the CAPE COD LEAGUE last summer, Adams was honored as a 2002 Baseball All-American by BASEBALL AMERICA. 6-22 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) C JOSH PHELPS smacked his minor-league leading 22nd home run with three RBI in their 11-9 victory over the TOLEDO MUD HENS. Phelps was hit by a pitch in the first inning and lined an RBI double in the third. The 24-year-old, who led the Class-AA SOUTHERN LEAGUE last season in home runs (31) and doubles (36) and was second with 97 RBI, drilled a two-run shot in the fifth inning to take sole possession of the home run lead and drew a walk and scored in the seventh inning. The 6'3", 220-pound native of Alaska is batting .283 with 64 hits, 17 doubles and 57 RBI in 62 games with Syracuse. 6-22 TENNESSEE SMOKIES (SL) LHP DIEGOMAR MARKWELL tossed his first career shutout in their 3-0 victory at the JACKSONVILLE SUNS, in the second game of a doubleheader. Markwell scattered three hits, issued four walks and struck out four batters, improving his record to 8-4 with a 3.39 ERA and a save in 5 appearances. The 21-year-old retired the side in order in the second frame and set down 10 of the final 11 batters in his fourth career complete game. A native of the Netherlands, Markwell signed with the TORONTO BLUE JAYS in August of 1996 and has allowed 81 hits and fanned 41 batters in 87.2 innings in his first season in Class-AA. 6-25 RHP DONNIE BRIDGES, 23, was the first of eight EXPOS first-round draft picks in 1997, and entering 2001 was considered their best prospect. He was sent to the FLORIDA MARLINS for OF BRETT RONEBERG on this date. Bridges hadn't been the same pitcher the last two years that he was in 2000, when he won 16 games reaching the Double-A HARRISBURG SENATORS. Bothered by shoulder trouble in 2001, he won just four games and posted a 6.64 ERA in 81 innings. So far this 2002 season he had not fared much better, with a 4-4 record, 6.14 ERA in 14 starts with the Senators, where he had dominated two years earlier. He allowed 63 hits in as many innings, with 49 Ks, while walking 42. As a result he was designated for assignment when the Expos needed a roster spot for RHP DAN SMITH. At his best, he threw in the low 90s, wih a fastball to both sides of the plate, with a good curveball and changeup at times. He was assigned to the PORTLAND SEADOGS of the EASTERN LEAGUE. BRETT RONEBERG, also 23, was signed as an International free agent. A contact hitter, he's best known for his participation on Australia's national baseball team, where he hit .333 at the 2000 Olympics (the second-highest average on the club behind former MLB C DAVE NILSSON) and hit .240 at the 2001 World Cup. He is a career .220 hitter with little power (.376 slugging percentage) or speed. He had been sidelined for much of this 2002 season with a torn tendon in a finger, and was currently hitting .226-0-7 in 18 games at Class-A with the JUPITER HAMMERHEADS of the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE. 6-25 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) OF MATT CEPICKY went 4-for-5 with two RBI in their 10-8 triumph at the ERIE SEAWOLVES, doubling home a pair of runs in the first inning, singled and scored in the third, doubled and scored in the fourth and laced a two-out base hit in the seventh. The 24-year-old is batting .287 with 85 hits, 20 doubles, 11 homers and 54 RBI through 75 games. 6-28 The HARRISBURG SENATORS announced today that RHP JUSTIN WAYNE had been added to the NATIONAL LEAGUE team for the Double-A All-Star Game, to be played on July 10th at Norwich, Connecticut, replacing LHP CLIFF LEE who had been traded to the CLEVELAND INDIANS and will now be participating as a member of the AMERICAN LEAGUE squad. Lee was part of the trade announced on June 27th with the MONTREAL EXPOS sending 1B LEE STEVENS and other top prospects BRANDON PHILLIPS and GRADY SIZEMORE over to THE TRIBE for BARTOLO COLON, with Lee being assigned to the AKRON AEROS, while Phillips moved from the OTTAWA LYNX to the BUFFALO BISONS, the Indians Triple-A team. Wayne is currently second in the EASTERN LEAGUE with a 2.37 ERA with a 5-2 record over 92.2 innings, allowing just 70 hits, 27 earned runs, 30 walks and 50 strikeouts in his 17 starts. 6-28 OTTAWA LYNX (IL) RHP CARL PAVANO went 3-for-3 with three RBI in a 12-3 rout of the NORFOLK TIDES, as he singled into left-center in the first inning, smacked a two-run double into right field in the fourth, then punched a run-scoring base hit during an eight-run fifth inning to record his first-ever three RBI game at the Class-AAA level. On the mound, the 26-year-old allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits with three strikeouts and a walk over seven innings for the win, improving to 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two starts since coming to Ottawa. |
