5-01 RICHMOND BRAVES (IL) RHP DOUG LINTON tossed a four-hit shutout in his squad's 10-0 blanking of the PAWTUCKET RED SOX, allowing a base hit to open the contest then shut the door, retiring the next 15 batters and 10 of the final 11 in his first complete game of the season as the 36-year-old scattered four hits and struck out six wihout issuing a walk in the victory to improve to 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA.
5-01 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) SS BRANDON PHILLIPS singled in the fifth inning to extend his league-leading hitting streak to 20 games and 3B SCOTT HODGES homered and collected six RBI in their 9-2 win over the READING PHILLIES. Phillips is near the top in almost every major offensive category in the league this season, and is now second in batting with a .386 average, has a .651 slugging percentage, and is .452 on-base percentage ranks third. He is second in hits with 32 and home runs with 6. Hodges produced an RBI ground out in the third inning, crushed a grand slam in the fifth and doubled home a run in the seventh. The 23-year-old is a first-round pick of the MONTREAL EXPOS in 1997, and now leads his team in runs batted in with 18. 5-02 OKLAHOMA RED HAWKS (PCL) RHP AARON MYETTE spun a two-hit shutout to lead his team to a 1-0 win over the NASHVILLE SOUNDS. Myette retired the first five batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk in the second inning, and 17 of the first 18 of the contest. The 24-year-old Canadian also set down 12 in a row between the second and sixth innings and eight of the final nine hitters. The former first round draft pick of the CHICAGO WHITE SOX in 1997 allowed just two singles, issued a pair of walks while striking out six in the win to improve his record to 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA over his six starts. 5-03 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) SS BRANDON PHILLIPS hit safely in his 21st straight game, a 3-0 loss to the AKRON AEROS. He singled in both the fourth and sixth innings, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts, tying him for the longest hit streak in the minors this season. Phillips is currently batting .410 with 16 RBI during the streak, leading the EASTERN LEAGUE in batting average at .391 ranking second in four other major categories, including hits. 5-04 TENNESSEE SMOKIES (SL) RHP ESTEBAN LOAIZA tossed 7.2 scoreless innings and OF GABE GROSS matched a career-high with 6 RBI to help their team down the BIRMINGHAM BARONS, 7-0. Loaiza, recovering from tendinitis in his right shoulder, yielded five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk en route to the win. In four rehab starts at three different levels, the 30-year-old has posted a 1-0 record and a 0.53 ERA. Gross, a first round draft pick of the BLUE JAYS in 2001 out of AUBURN UNIVERSITY, belted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth, then crushed a grand slam in the ninth to complete the scoring. The 6'3", 205 pound outfielder, who hit just .118 with two RBI and no extra-base hits in his first 20 games, has posted a .358 average (10-for-26) with 10 RBI over his last seven games. 5-05 OTTAWA LYNX (IL) OF ENDY CHAVEZ hit for the cycle in his team's 8-7 victory at the COLUMBUS CLIPPERS. Chavez led off the contest with his second home run of the season, then tripled and scored and laced an RBI single in his two at-bats of a five-run third inning, completing the feat with a double in the sixth, drawing a walk and scoring the tying run in the top of the ninth. Four batters after Chavez scored, OF JAMES MOUTON knocked out a single into center field to score the go-ahead and winning run. Currently with his fourth organization in the last three seasons, Chavez ranks eighth in the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE with a .351 average. 5-05 BREVARD COUNTY MANATEES (FSL) 3B VINCE ROOI homered and drove in two runs for his group who dropped their ninth straight decision, 7-3, to the ST. LUCIE METS. The 20-year-old launched a two-run shot in the seventh inning for a 3-2 lead and recorded his third double of the season in his final at-bat in the ninth. The Manatees have been outscored, 50-28, during this ongoing slump, including four losses by one run. 5-05 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) C/OF JAYSON WERTH went 2-for-3 and recorded his second five-RBI game of the season to lead his team past the CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS, 11-5, when he doubled home a run in the second inning to even the score at 1-1 and then belted a grand slam in the fifth for his second home run in as many games. 5-05 TENNESSEE SMOKIES (SL) LHP RYAN SPILLE threw a three-hit shutout at the BIRMINGHAM BARONS, 4-0, as he retired the first nine batters he faced, yielding just three hits, struck out eight and issued a pair of walks to register the first shutout of his three year career. The 25-year-old, who improved to 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA over six starts, had missed all of the 2001 season due to shoulder surgery. 5-05 MONTREAL EXPOS 3B CHRIS TRUBY may feel somewhat lost in the shuffle by the return to the lineup of 3B FERNANDO TATIS, but he found another way to contribute, by letting C MICHAEL BARRETT use one of his bats when Barrett's failed to arrive ontime. "Since Truby and I use the same type, he gave me a few of his," said Barrett. "The other day I had three hits at Houston with his sticks. On Friday (May 3) my bats arrived. I struck out my first at-bat. I went back to Truby's bats, and I had an RBI single and a homer. Truby is a true team player. 5-08 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) 1B JEFF BAILEY homered in his third consecutive game, a 10-0 victory over the BOWIE BAYSOX. Bailey led off the fourth inning with a shot over the left centerfield wall. He also led off the seventh with a walk and doubled and scored in the ninth, RHP RON CHIAVACCI threw seven scoreless innings, yielding five hits, five walks and striking out five, for his first win in the five decisions this season. 5-08 CLEARWATER PHILLIES (FSL) OF TROY McNAUGHTON went 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBI and 2B BRIAN HITCHCOX went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and an RBI in their 10-2 pounding of the CHARLOTTE RANGERS. McNaughton launched a three-run blast in the first inning, singled home a run in the fifth and laced a two-run base hit with two outs in the eighth, the second time in his career that the 27-year-old Canadian-born flyhawk recorded six RBI in a game. Hitchcox singled and scored in both the first and fifth innings, smacked an RBI hit in the sixth and doubled and scored in the third and eighth innings for his first career five-hit game. 5-09 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MID) 2B GREG THISSEN hit safely in his 17th consecutive game to help his team roll over the BELOIT SNAPPERS, 10-1. The 20-year-old singled and scored in the first inning and smacked a bases-clearing double in the fifth. Thissen, an eighth-round selection of the MONTREAL EXPOS in 2001, has gone 24-for-61 with 10 doubles and 16 RBI over the 17-game stretch that began on 25 April. He is currently hitting .324 wth 35 hits, 13 doubles, and 21 RBI in 31 games and has a team-leading .409 on-base percentage, second in the MIDWEST LEAGUE. 5-10 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MID) 2B GREG THISSEN hit safely in his 18th straight game, in an 11-6 loss to the SOUTH BEND SILVER HAWKS. Thissen singled, but was forced out on a fielder's choice during a five-run fourth inning. Overall, he finished 1-for-4 with a walk. 5-11 JACKSONVILLE SUNS (SL) OF WILKIN RUAN capped a five-hit night with the game-winner in the bottom of the 14th as his squad slipped past the TENNESSEE SMOKIES, 7-6. The 23-year-old, who finished with five singles in the contest, got a base hit, scored and drew a bases-loaded walk in his two at-bats during a five-run sixth inning. Ruan was acquired by the LOS ANGELES DODGERS in March when RHP MATT HERGES was traded to the MONTREAL EXPOS. OF DEWAYNE WISE homered in the fifth inning for the Smokies, his third longball in three consecutive games. 5-11 NEW ORLEANS ZEPHYRS (PCL) RHP PETER MUNRO carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning to help his group edge the NASHVILLE SOUNDS, 2-1. The 26-year-old retired 19 of the first 22 batters he faced before giving up a two-out base hit in the seventh to break up the no-hit bid, then setting down the final six batters he faced, allowed just three hits, striking out eight and issued three walks over 8.2 innings to improve to 3-1 with a 2.83 ERA. He struck out two hitters in the second inning and the side in order in the eighth to help raise his season total to 43 over 41 innings. 5-11 RICHMOND BRAVES (IL) RHP DOUG LINTON struck out 10 batters over seven-plus scoreless inings to lead his team over the ROCHESTER RED WINGS, 1-0. The 36-year-old fanned four straight hitters between the sixth and seventh, yielding three hits and hit a batter, for the win, improving to 4-1 with a league-leading 1.24 ERA over eight starts. He allowed two earned runs or less in five consecutive outings, recording his first start with double-digit strikeouts since 15 August 2000, while with the COLORADO SKY SOX. 5-12 ARKANSAS TRAVELLERS (TEX) OF KENNY JAMES homered and drove home a career-high seven RBI in their 14-6 victory at the TULSA DRILLERS. James laced a two-run single in the second inning, drew a bases-loaded walk in the third and connected on a grand slam in the seventh. 5-12 DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS (FSL) 1B SIMON POND recorded five RBI for the second time in his first 15 games to lead his group over the CLEARWATER PHILLIES, 9-4. The 25-year-old Canadian-born infielder belted a three-run homer in the first inning and hit a two-run single and scored to highlight a five-run second. Through Sunday, he lead the league with 40 RBI. 5-12 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) OF PEDRO SWANN finished 3-for-6 with seven RBI in a 15-13 victory for his squad at the LOUISVILLE BATS. Swann capped a seven-run sixth inning with a grand slam, ripped an RBI double in the eighth and added a two-run double in the ninth. 5-13 TENNESSE SMOKIES (SL) RHP PETE BAUER threw his first career shutout in a 12-0 victory at the JACKSONVILLE SUNS. A second-round draft pick of the TORONTO BLUE JAYS in 2000, Bauer yielded six hits and struck out three without issuing a walk to improve his record to 1-4 with a 2.61 ERA. The 23-year-old induced 16 groundouts and retired the final 12 batters in order to pick up his first win in his last 11 starts, dating back to 10 August 2001. 5-13 DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS (FSL) 1B SIMON POND drove in four runs and homered for the third straight game to lead his squad over the CLEARWATER PHILLIES, 13-5. The 6'1", 190 pound Canadian infielder led off the sixth inning with his eighth home run, then ripped a bases-clearing double and scored later in the inning to highlight a nine-run outburst. Pond has driven home 11 runs in his last three games and leads the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE with 44 runs batted in. RHP ROB HAMANN yielded an earned run with four strikeouts and four walks over five innings of hitless relief to pick up the victory, and since entering the bullpen after a terrible start on 3 May, he has only allowed an unearned run and three hits over 10.1 innings. 5-14 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) OF MIKE RYAN went 4-for-4 with two home runs in their 4-3 loss at the SALT LAKE STINGERS. The 24-year-old homered leading off the contest, singled in the second inning, drilled another solo shot in the fifth and singled again in the eighth. A fifth-round selection of the MINNESOTA TWINS in 1996, Ryan is batting .315 with 47 hits, 38 RBI and 28 runs scored in 36 games and is currently ranked first in the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE in home runs (13) and extra-base hits (26) and is third with a slugging percentage of .691. 5-14 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) OF VALENTINO PASCUCCI hit a home run in his third straight contest, helping his side defeat the TRENTON THUNDER, 7-5. The 23-year-old drew a walk in the second inning, singled in the fourth, doubled and scored in the fifth and smacked a leadoff shot in the eighth for a 6-5 lead. Pascucci has gone 5-for-10 with four RBI over this three-game stretch and is second in the EASTERN LEAGUE with nine home runs. 5-16 VAL PASCUCCI continued his hot hitting, homering for the fifth time in his last seven games, collecting four RBI in his HARRISBURG SENATORS 8-5 win over TRENTON. He drew a walk in his first at-bat in the second inning, delivering on a sacrifice fly to right field in the sixth, then crushing a three-run shot, that snapped a 4-4 tie in the top of the 10th inning. Over his last seven games he has hit .400 going with five homers and 13 RBI. 5-17 NORFOLK TIDES (IL) OF CHRIS LATHAM went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and three RBI in their 10-4 loss to the SCRANTON-WILKES BARRE RED BARONS. He ripped an RBI triple in the first inning, belted a two-run homer in the fifth, which gave him three longballs and 10 RBI with a batting average of .500 over his last three games. 5-18 NORFOLK TIDES (IL) 3B ANDY TRACY hit a pair of home runs in their 5-1 win over the SCRANTON-WILKES BARRE RED BARONS, belting a solo shot in the second inning, drew an intentional walk in the fifth and drilled a leadoff homer in the eighth. 5-18 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) RHP MIKE SMITH pitched a six-hit shutout to lead them to an 8-0 victory over the INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS in the first game of a double-header. The 24-year-old retired eight batters in a row between the second and the fifth inning, striking out two hitters without issuing a walk to improve to 4-1 in five recent starts with a 1.20 ERA. He induced 11 flyouts, seven groundouts and now has 19 Ks over 30 innings. RHP MARK HENDRICKSON, who retired 13 straight hitters between the second and the sixth innings, including six by strikeout, yielded just one hit over 6.1 innings to pick up the win for his side in the second game of the double-header by a 6-0 score. 5-20 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (IL) OF MICHAEL RESTROVICH belted two home runs in their 13-7 loss to the OKLAHOMA RED HAWKS. The 23-year-old led off the second inning with a solo shot and followed a two-run homer by 1B TODD SEARS in the fourth with his second blast of the game. A second-round selection of the MINNESOTA TWINS in the 1997 draft, Restovich has four multi-homer games in his career and is currently hitting .296 with 45 hits, 14 doubles and 32 runs scored through 41 games of his first season in Class-AAA. 5-21 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) LHP CLIFFORD LEE struck out 12 batters over six innings in his team's 7-1 loss to the TRENTON THUNDER. The 23-year-old retired the first nine batters, including seven by strikeout, before yielding a hit leading off the fourth inning. He then set down seven of the next eight before allowing a two-out, RBI single in the sixth. A fourth-round selection of the EXPOS in the 2000 draft, Lee allowed two runs, four hits and issued a walk in the loss, falling to 4-1, with a 2.66 ERA through nine starts. The Arizona native fanned two batters in the first, second and fifth frames and struck out the side in order in the third to become the league-leader in strikeouts with 60 over 50.2 innings. 5-21 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) OF PEDRO SWANN went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three runs scored in his team's victory over LOUISVILLE BATS. The 31-year-old led off both the fourth and sixth frames with a solo blast, ripped a two-out triple and scored in the eighth and drew one of four walks issued in the 10th. Swann, who was signed as a free agent by the BLUE JAYS in February of 2002, is now batting .309 with 47 hits, 30 RBI and 29 runs scored over 39 games with his new club. 5-21 BREVARD COUNTY MANATEES (FSL) 1B NICK DEMPSEY drove home a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to lift his group to a 9-6 victory over the DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS. With the bases loaded and only one out, Dempsey ripped a two-run double, snapping a 6-6 tie. C GUILLERMO ORTIZ drove in four runs for the BLUE JAYS, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning that gave his side a 5-4 lead. Yet it was his costly error with two outs in the top of the ninth which allowed the tying run to score. RHP STEVE PARRIS made his second rehab start with Dunedin, allowing a run, three hits and striking out three over five innings for a no-decision. The six-year major leaguer, who gave up five runs and seven hits in 4.1 frames in his first start on May 16, is returning from shoulder surgery. RHP BOB FILE also appeared in the contest, surrendering four runs, three earned, and five hits in 1.2 innings. 5-21 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MIDWEST) RHP DON LEVINSKI struck out a career-high 12 batters over six innings for a no-decision in their 5-2 vistory over the WEST MICHIGAN WHITECAPS in 10 innings. Levinski, who fanned seven of the first nine batters he faced, including the side in order in the third, allowed a pair of runs, four hits and walked one while failing to win his fourth consecutive start. A second-round pick of the MONTREAL EXPOS in last year's draft, he has started this season 5-2, 2.90 and 54 strikeouts over 49.2 innings. C ANTHONY AMBROSINI capped a three-run top of the 10th with a two-run single for the winners. 5-22 "It's pretty simple. He let teams know his interest was getting to 500 home runs, not playing baseball. If I'm a GM, I don't sign anybody who isn't thinking about the team first. He can play, he can DH, but he said the wrong things. He was one of the best players in the game at his peak, but he kept talking about home runs, not baseball." DAVE HENDERSON, now a broadcaster with the SEATTLE MARINERS, but a former teammate of JOSE CANSECO while with the OAKLAND ATHLETICS, on why more teams weren't interested in the recently retired, one time slugger. 5-22 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MID) DH MATTHEW THEDE homered and had a career-high five runs batted in in a 13-4 rout over the WEST MICHIGAN WHITECAPS, after going hitless in his first two plate appearances, he laced a two-run single in the sixth inning, supplying his team with a 5-1 cushion. The undrafted, Iowa-native, then singled in the seventh and capped the scoring in the ninth with a three-run shot for his first multi-hit game of the season. 1B CLYDE WILLIAMS homered, scored four times and collected three hits for the winners. 5-22 EDMONTON TRAPPERS (PCL) OF MICHAEL RESTOVICH went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in his squad's 8-1 victory over the OKLAHOMA RED HAWKS. The 23-year-old drilled a two-run homer in the second inning, singled and scored in the fifth, ripped an RBI triple and scored in the sixth and singled home a run in the seventh. Over his last eight games he is batting .500 with 16 hits, six home runs, 11 runs batted in and 11 runs scored. The 6'4", 245 pound slugger is batting .313 with 50 hits, 25 extra-base hits, which is third best in the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE, with 32 RBI and 36 runs scored in 43 games of his first season in Class-AAA. 5-24 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) RHP JEFF McAVOY hit a game-winning home run in the 13th inning, picking up the decision in leading his team to a 5-4 victory over the BINGHAMPTON METS. With one out in the 13th, the 25-year-old belted his first career hit in two at-bats over the outfield fence, and also threw three scoreless frames of relief, allowing one hit and striking out a pair for the win, and in doing so improved to 2-3 with a 7.43 ERA in 14 appearances. 5-24 NEW HAVEN RAVENS (EL) SS KEVIN NICHOLSON collected a pair of RBI to lead his group to their 10th straight victory, a 4-3 decision, over the BOWIE BAYSOX. The Canadian-born infielder lined a two-run double and scored to highlight a three-run third inning in his only hit of the contest. 5-25 CALGARY CANNONS (PCL) RHP JAMIE ARNOLD tossed the first nine-inning no-hitter in the 17-year history of the franchise, defeating the IOWA CUBS, 12-1. Arnold, who retired 20 consecutive batters between the first and eighth innings, yielded an unearned run, struck out six and walked three, and also hit two batters and recorded a balk in the 113-pitch outing. OF MARK SMITH belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and SS KEVIN HOOPER and 2B MATT ERICKSON each had two RBI in a seven-run fifth for the winners, who matched a season high with 12 runs. The last no-hitter for Calgary was a seven-inning gem thrown by RHP ERIC HANSON on 21 August 1988. 5-26 COLUMBUS CLIPPERS (IL) C CHRIS WIDGER went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in their 13-9 victory over the SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS. The 31-year-old hit into an RBI groundout during an eight-run second inning and singled leading off the third, then belted a solo shot in both the sixth and seventh innings for his first multi-homer game of the season. 5-26 CALGARY CANNONS (PCL) C CHARLIE GREENE went 3-for-3 with six RBI in their 11-4 triumph at the IOWA CUBS. The 31-year-old crushed a two-out, three-run homer in the sixth inning, laced a two-run base hit in the eighth and doubled home a run in the ninth. 5-27 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) SS BRANDON PHILLIPS went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored to lead his team to an 11-4 win over the BINGHAMPTON METS. Phillips hit a two-run blast in the fourth inning, singled home a run and scored during a six-run sixth and drilled a solo shot leading off the eighth for his fourth career multi-homer game, and is second in the EASTERN LEAGUE in batting with a .349 average and has a league leading 65 hits with eight homers, 32 runs batted in and 33 runs scored through 44 games of his fourth year as a pro. 5-28 CHARLESTON ALLEY CATS (SAL) 2B LEE DELFINO homered twice and drove in three runs to pace his team to an 8-1 rout of the LEXINGTON LEGENDS. The Ottawa, Ontario native belted a two-run shot in the sixth inning for a 5-1 lead and later smashed a leadoff blast in the eighth for his first two professional longballs. 5-28 CLINTON LUMBERKINGS (MID) OF MATT BROWN recorded two home runs and three runs batted in to lift his group over the BURLINGTON BEES, 5-1, in the first game of a double-header. He hit a two-run blast in the second inning and led off the sixth with a solo shot for his second career multi-homer performance. 5-28 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) C JOSH PHELPS went 3-for-5 with a clutch home run in his team's 8-6 victory over the CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS. Phelps, who singled and then scored in the third inning, followed a leadoff single by OF PEDRO SWANN in the top of the ninth innings with a two-run homer that snapped a 6-6 tie. The backstop leads the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE with 15 homers, 30 extra-base hits and a slugging percentage of .653. 5-29 SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS (IL) OF PEDRO SWANN finished 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs to lead his group over the CHARLOTTE KNIGHTS, 7-4, hitting the back end of back-to-back homers with OF CHAD MOTTOLA in the first inning, smacking a two-run shot in the fifth for a 5-0 lead and singled and scored on a groundout in the seventh. The 31-year-old veteran, who has collected an RBI in 10 of his last 12 games, has knocked home 31 runs in 25 games in the month of May. 5-31 HARRISBURG SENATORS (EL) LHP CLIFF LEE struck out 10 batters over six-plus innings to help his team edge the BINGHAMPTON METS, 2-1, yielded a run, five hits and a pair of walks over 6.1 innings for the win, retiring 10 of 12 hitters between the first and fifth innings and fanned seven of the final nine batters he faced, raising his league-leading strikeout total to 79 over 64 innings. The 2000 draft pick of the MONTREAL EXPOS improved his record to 6-1 with a 2.39 ERA over 11 starts in his first season of Class-AA ball. LHP PHIL SEIBER, originally selected by the Expos in the 2000 draft, issued a walk to open the game and then retired the next 18 batters in order before yielding two runs and three hits in the seventh to suffer the hard-luck loss for the Mets. |
