Spring Training 2000 Names...News...Notes...

WCW Wrestler, DALE "THE DEMON" TORBORG, the one who wears face make-up as if a member of the Rock and Roll band ' KISS ', but more importantly the son of JEFF TORBORG, who is serving as a Spring Training instructor for the Montreal Expos, was in uniform working out with the Expos on the morning of Saturday, March 18.....He was in South Florida for a WCW pay-per-view event that evening at the new American Airlines Arena in Miami.....The 6'5", 265 pounder is a former minor league farmhand in the New York Mets organization where he was a teammate of current Expos pitcher GUILLERMO MOTA.....During Spring Training JEFF TORBORG is assisting in instruction with the catchers....Over his ten-year career in the major leagues, as a standout catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels, he caught two no-hitters, then broke in as a major league manager with the Cleveland Indians during the 1977 campaign before earning a Manager of the Year Award with the Chicago White Sox in 1990.....The Expos also have another special instructor with them during this Spring Training, MAURY WILLS, who spent 14 campaigns in MLB and led the National League in stolen bases for six straight seasons from 1960-1965, with a lifetime total of 585 swipes.....He broke the single season SB record of TY COBB, who had amassed 97, when he finished the 1962 season with a new record of 104.....In addition he was the Most Valuable Player in the National League
and Player of the Year in 1962, Shortstop of the Year in both 1970-1971 and was a recipient of a Gold Glove Award in 1961 and 1962.....After this outstanding playing career over 23 seasons in the pros he was the skipper
of the Seattle Mariners during the 1980-1981 seaons.....ROB DUCEY is experiencing a truly fine training camp, with the Philadelphia Phillies, placing highly in the weekly statistics in almost every offensive category.....DEREK BELL, who switched from uniform # 19 to # 16 in honor of his fellow native of Tampa, DWIGHT GOODEN, over the last ten days is batting over .400, and RICKEY HENDERSON is hanging in at the .500 level, for the New York Mets..........JIM BULLINGER, who has pitched parts of seven seasons in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners and Montreal Expos, was in camp with the Los Angeles Dodgers until sent down to AAA recently, and his younger brother KIRK BULLINGER was recently sent down by the Philadelphia Phillies to their AAA affiliate, the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Red Barons.....JUSTIN SPEIER, son of the former Montreal Expos infielder, CHRIS SPEIER, is having an outstanding camp for the Cleveland Indians.....LHP MARK LANGSTON announced his retirement over the previous weekend, having compiled quite an impressive record over the years.....MARK WHITEN has signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians.....JIM FREGOSI, named as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays on March 17, 1999, has now entered his second season as Blue Jays manager and his first full camp with the club.....He currently owns a career managing record of 945 - 1016 with an American League total of 514 - 553 and a National League tally of 431 - 463.....Former Blue Jays hitting coach, GARY MATTHEWS, is the newest member of the radio broadcast team for the Blue Jays, joining long-time broadcasters TOM CHEEK, who has called every game from 1977, and JERRY HOWARTH.....The Montreal Expos have more countries represented on their spring roster ( eight and one territory ) than any other major league franchise.....The nine flags flying outside the clubhouse at their Roger Dean Stadium offices, in Jupiter, Florida, represent the nationalities of the players from the USA ( 25 ), Dominican Republic ( 6 ), Venezuela ( 2 ), Puerto Rico ( 2 ), Canada ( 1 ), Japan ( 1 ), Australia ( 1 ), Colombia ( 1 ), and Panama ( 1 )
