Baseball players end their strike and return
to spring training to prepare for the 1995 season. Replacement players
who had dreams of playing in the big leagues are dismissed.
4-02-2001 – MATT STAIRS was the
CHICAGO CUBS Opening Day first baseman,
after entering the campaign with only 16 big league appearances at that
position, becoming just the fourth to open a season at this position
for the Cubs since 1978.
4-02-2001 – The EXPOS downed
the CHICAGO CUBS at WRIGLEY FIELD, 3-2, to
open the 2001 campaign as PETER BERGERON lined the first pitch of the
season for a single and on the second pitch, JOSE VIDRO homered. In
attempting to throw out a runner in the seventh inning, C SANDY
MARTINEZ, who had replaced C MICHAEL BARRETT, who had earlier been
ejected for questioning balls and strikes, tore his medial collateral
ligament in his right elbow and is lost for the season. In turn he was
relieved by utilityman MIKE MORDECAI, who caught UGUETH URBINA to close
out the game. The next day C RANDY KNORR is recalled from the OTTAWA
LYNX and stays with Montreal for the full season.
4-03-1983 – The BLUE JAYS 7-6
win over the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS gave the
team a new pre-season record of 16 wins versus 10 losses, as they
scored five times in the 6th inning to rally for the win. 4-03-2000 –
The MONTREAL EXPOS started the season with more countries represented
on their 40-man roster (eight and one territory) than any other MLB
team. The nine flags inside their clubhouse represent the nationalities
of the players: USA (25), DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (5), VENEZUELA (2), PUERTO
RICO (2), JAPAN (1), AUSTRALIA (1), COLUMBIA (1), PANAMA (1) and CANADA
(1).
4-03-2000 – The 32nd Opening
Night sell-out crowd of 51249 was the
largest for the EXPOS at OLYMPIC STADIUM since 13 April 1993 when
51,539 witnessed the home opener against the Astros, and was the first
official sell-out since 2 May 1995 when they drew 46,515 versus the
Mets, the first season with tarped off sections in the upper deck.
VLADIMIR GUERRERO had two home runs to become only the second EXPOS
batter to homer twice on Opening Day as AL OLIVER accomplished this
feat in 1983, but Montreal went on to lose 10-4 to the LOS ANGELES
DODGERS.
4-04-1977 – First spring
training camp closed on a positive note with a
2-1 victory over the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS to boost the BLUE JAYS
exhibition mark to 8 wins against 16 losses.
4-04-1988 – GEORGE BELL sets a
MLB record hitting 3 home runs on

1B DOUG AULT becomes an instant fan favourite by slugging two home runs
in this inaugural contest, powering his squad to a 9-5 victory. ALVIS
WOODS became only the 11th player in MLB history to slug a pinch-hit
homer in his first major league at-bat, when he was brought in to hit
for RF STEVE BOWLING in the 5th inning, as his 2-run blast off the late
pitcher FRANCISCO BARRIOS gave Toronto a 7-4 lead.
4-07-1978 – New faces RICO
CARTY and JOHN MAYBERRY are in the starting
lineup, at DH and 1B respectively, as the BLUE JAYS open their second
campaign on the road against the DETROIT TIGERS at TIGER STADIUM, but
are on the short end of a 6-2 decision.
4-07-1978 – PETE WARD debuts as
the hitting coach of the ATLANTA
BRAVES, joining another Canadian, TIM BURGESS, as the 3B Coach.
4-08-1969 – In their inaugural
game in MLB the MONTREAL EXPOS defeated
the NEW YORK METS by an 11-10 mark, at SHEA STADIUM, before a large
Opening Day crowd of 44541. The first hitter was MAURY WILLS, who also
had the first stolen base in the 6th inning; the first hit was a
two-run double in the first inning, off the bat of BOB BAILEY; the
first run scored was by GARY SUTHERLAND who had reached first on an
error; MACK JONES was the first to draw a walk in the first inning; the
starting pitcher was JIM 'MUDCAT' GRANT, who was relieved by DAN McGINN
who the hit the first home run, a solo shot, in the 3rd inning off TOM
SEAVER; and the eventual winning pitcher was DON SHAW, while CARROLL
SEMBERA achieved the initial save.
4-08-1979 – Following his
release by the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, RHP JEFF
BYRD is signed as a free-agent by the SEATTLE MARINERS.
4-08-1986 – The BLUE JAYS open
the season at the TEXAS RANGERS in
defense of their AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST title with new manager JIMY
WILLIAMS at the helm, after he replaces BOBBY COX who accepted the
general manager position with his hometown ATLANTA BRAVES.
4-08-1987 – PHIL NIEKRO and
STEVE CARLTON appeared in the game for the
CLEVELAND INDIANS vs the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, the first time that two
300-game winning pitchers are in the same game for the same team, as
later on both were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
4-08-1991 – With their new
line-up, the BLUE JAYS start at home to the
BOSTON RED SOX with JOE CARTER, ROBERTO ALOMAR and DEVON WHITE, but are
the losers on Opening Day by a 6-2 decision.
4-08-1995 – The ST. LOUIS
CARDINALS traded LHP RHEAL CORMIER to the
BOSTON RED SOX with OF MARK WHITEN, for IF SCOTT COOPER and a player to
be named later.
4-08-1998 – The JUPITER
HAMMERHEADS, the Class-A club for the MONTREAL
EXPOS in the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE, play their inaugural home game at
ROGER DEAN STADIUM in JUPITER, FLORIDA vs the ST. LUCIE METS, but come
out on the losing end in a 5-3 loss.
4-09-1971 – The OAKLAND
ATHLETICS traded 1B/OF FELIPE ALOU to the NEW
YORK YANKEES in exchange for LHP ROB GARDNER and RHP RON KLIMKOWSKI.
4-09-1977 – On the second day
in BLUE JAYS team history, DAVE LEMANCZYK
pitched the first complete game, at EXHIBITION STADIUM, taking the loss
to CHICAGO WHITE SOX, 3-2.
4-09-1980 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS open their fourth season against the
SEATTLE MARINERS, piloted by new skipper BOBBY MATTICK, who was named
to replace ROY HARTSFIELD in the off-season. ERNIE WHITT is the Opening
Day catcher and takes over the position on an ongoing basis. He will go
on to catch 1139 games for Toronto, almost twice as many as any other
Blue Jays player in franchise history.
4-09-1981 – The BLUE JAYS open
the 1981 season in Detroit with a 6-2
loss to JACK MORRIS, and struggle out of the gate, posting a 16-42
record before a player strike halts the season.
4-09-1982 – BOBBY COX, the
third skipper of the TORONTO BLUE JAYS,
takes the team into its sixth season, introducing a platooning system
utilizing reserve players GARTH IORG, RANCE MULLINIKS, BUCK MARTINEZ,
and ERNIE WHITT.
4-09-1986 – DOYLE ALEXANDER
earned his 150th career victory as his BLUE
JAYS beat the TEXAS RANGERS 3-1 in their 1st win of this 1986 season,
as TONY FERNANDEZ had the game-winning RBI.
4-09-1993 – MIKE LANSING, on
Opening Day, had the first hit for the
MONTREAL EXPOS against the expansion COLORADO ROCKIES. (see 3-31-1998).
4-09-2001 – CHRIS REITSMA
started the first regular-season game for his
CINCINNATI REDS at the new home of the PITSBURGH PIRATES, PNC BALLPARK,
and in the 8-2 decision earned his first career MLB victory, throwing
6.1 innings, giving up 6 hits, 2 runs with one earned, 1 walk and 5
strikeouts. Later he autographed one of the last balls used in the game
for display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum at
Cooperstown.
4-10-1968 – The father of ED
SPRAGUE, also named ED SPRAGUE, was the
first-ever relief pitcher for the OAKLAND ATHLETICS, when he appeared
in the 7th inning vs the BALTIMORE ORIOLES at MEMORIAL STADIUM.
4-10-1971 – RHP BILL STONEMAN,
starting for the MONTREAL EXPOS, was the
loser by a 4-1 decision in the opening game at VETERANS STADIUM, before
55352 fans.
4-10-1977 – BLUE JAYS LHP JERRY
GARVIN defeats the CHICAGO WHITE SOX,
3-1, allowing six hits in eight innings in his MLB debut.
4-10-1977 – RHP BILL ATKINSON
gained his first MLB decision in his
first appearance of the season at the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.
4-10-1985 – BILL CAUDILL earned
the win in his first appearance with
the BLUE JAYS, relieving for DOYLE ALEXANDER, to record a 1-0 shutout
win over the KANSAS CITY ROYALS.
4-10-1995 – C PAT BORDERS is
signed as a free-agent by the KANSAS CITY
ROYALS.
4-10-1998 – HENRY RODRIGUEZ, of
the CHICAGO CUBS, went 5-for-5 against
the MONTREAL EXPOS, in Montreal, hitting his 4th home run totalling 3
runs batted in with a walk in a 13-10 win for the CUBBIES.
4-11-1963 – C DON LEPPERT
clubbed three home runs for the WASHINGTON
SENATORS, which proved to be half his output for the entire season, and
was later selected for the AMERICAN LEAGUE ALL-STAR squad but did not
play in the mid-summer classic.
4-11-1971 – OF ROGER FREED hit
the first-ever grand slam for his
PHILLIES at the new VETERANS STADIUM, off HOWIE REED of the MONTREAL
EXPOS.
4-11-1980 – BOBBY MATTICK's
first win as the BLUE JAYS manager wasn't
easy until ROY HOWELL hit a 2-run 11th inning single which lifted them
to a 10-7 triumph over the SEATTLE MARINERS.
4-11-1986 – VENTURA returned
to the CALIFORNIA LEAGUE, but the team,
the VENTURA COUNTY GULLS, would play all their home games during the
day at Ventura College, because no lighted facility was available in
the city. This college field sat only 1400 and no beer could be sold.
The franchise moved at the end of the 1986 season.
4-11-1993 – LHP GRAEME LLOYD
became the first pitcher and only the
fourth player born in Australia to appear in the major leagues,
debuting with the MILWAUKEE BREWERS. Then, on 4-14-1993, he teamed with
catcher DAVE NILSSON to comprise the first-ever Australian battery.
4-12-1978 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS purchased LHP BALOR MOORE from the
CALIFORNIA ANGELS.
4-12-1982 – GARTH IORG's double
and triple sparked the BLUE JAYS to a
9-5 victory over the DETROIT TIGERS, with DAMASO GARCIA contributing 3
RBI which included the game winner.
4-12-1991 – LHP DENIS BOUCHER
makes his MLB debut in a 5-4 no decision

4-13-1977 – Four DETROIT TIGERS
errors in the 6th inning allowed the
BLUE JAYS to score 4 times to frustrate them 7-6, as pitcher DAVE
LEMANCZYK posted his first win with the team. MIKE WILLIS makes MLB
debut pitching 2.2 shutout innings to gain a save in his first outing.
4-13-1979 – JIM CLANCY tossed a
two-hitter, defeating the KANSAS CITY
ROYALS, 4-1, in 5 1/2 innings of rain-shortened contest, in which AMOS
OTIS singled in first and FRED PATEK singled in the fifth.
4-13-1993 – LEE SMITH became
the MLB all-time career saves leader, as
his ST. LOUIS CARDINALS defeated the LOS ANGELES DODGERS by a 9-7
result, surpassing the mark of 358 saves by JEFF REARDON of the
CINCINNATI REDS.
4-13-1999 – RHP JEFF ZIMMERMAN
pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in his MLB
debut at the SEATTLE MARINERS, earning his first big league win the
following night at the KINGDOME.
4-14-1969 – The first official
MLB game ever outside the United States
was played at JARRY PARK in Montreal, as the expansion MONTREAL EXPOS
downed the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS by an 8-7 score, before a crowd of
29,184.
4-14-1977 – Becoming just the
second Canadian-born player to make their
roster, OF PAUL HODGSON was signed as a non-drafted free-agent by the
TORONTO BLUE JAYS, which took place at EXHIBITION STADIUM on his 17th
birthday after he had worked out with the club. During the 1980 season
he batted .220 with 1 HR and 5 RBI in 20 games.
4-14-1977 – JERRY GARVIN
became the first Toronto hurler to throw a
complete game victory, dropping the DETROIT TIGERS 5-3, striking out 10
batters along the way.
4-14-1979 – YOUPPI! makes his
professional debut as the official mascot
of the MONTREAL EXPOS and has been a rallying point for the fans to
this day. A youthful prankster possessing good humour, an impish grin
and an abundance of energy, YOUPPI! became a focal point for the
exuberant EXPOS fans. Always a very visible part of the overall
atmosphere at OLYMPIC STADIUM, his desire for fun has made him most
recognizable and he often ventures out to participate in hundreds of
off field appearances as an ambassador for the MONTREAL EXPOS.
4-14-1993 – SPARKY ANDERSON
earned his 2000th victory as a manager as
his DETROIT TIGERS rallied to down the OAKLAND ATHLETICS, 3-2.
4-14-2001 – CHRIS REITSMA
recorded his first MLB hit, a single off AL
LEITER of the NEW YORK METS, and in the 1-0 victory became the first
REDS hurler to pitch into the eighth inning.
4-15-1977 – Ceremonial first
pitches were thrown by seven Quebec-born
former MLB players, GUS DUGAS, TIM HARKNESS, RAYMOND DAVIAULT, GEORGES
MIRANDA, RON PICHE, CLAUDE RAYMOND, and JEAN-PIERRE ROY, on the opening
game at OLYMPIC STADIUM in Montreal before a crowd of 57,592 in a 7-2
loss to STEVE CARLTON of the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.
4-15-1983 – TORONTO BLUE JAYS
edged the NEW YORK YANKEES 6-5. ERNIE
WHITT had the game-winning RBI while DAVE STIEB held the BRONX BOMBERS
to just eight hits.
4-15-1993 – ANDRE DAWSON became
just the 25th player to hit 400 home
runs as his BOSTON RED SOX downed the CLEVELAND INDIANS, 4-3.
4-15-2001 – CHRIS REITSMA, of
the CINCINNATI REDS, was named NATIONAL
LEAGUE Co-Player of the Week for the period 4-9 April, appearing in 2
games, with a 2-0 record and 0.68 ERA, becoming the first REDS pitcher
to earn this honor since 9-23-1990.
4-16-1980 – For the fourth
straight year Toronto won their home opener,
as DAVE STIEB's 6-hitter and 12 base hits by the BLUE JAYS produced an
11-2 trouncing against the MILWAUKEE BREWERS.
4-16-1989 – KELLY GRUBER hit
for the cycle, becoming the first BLUE
JAYS hitter to do so, going 4-for-4 with a career high 6 runs batted
in, homering in the first followed by a 2-run double in the second
inning. In the seventh he notched a two-run triple, then closed out
this one-of-a kind performance with a single in the ninth.
4-17-1969 – BILL STONEMAN of
the MONTREAL EXPOS pitched a 7-0 no-hitter
against the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES in only the 10th game of the
franchise's existence.
4-17-1980 – RICK BOSETTI
blasted a one-out home run in the bottom of
the 9th inning to outscore the MILWAUKEE BREWERS, 1-0, being only the
4th hit of the game for the BLUE JAYS.
4-17-1982 – In a pinch-hitting
appearance for his NEW YORK METS, RUSTY
STAUB picks up his 2600th career hit against the MONTREAL EXPOS, in a
2-1 METS victory.
4-17-1987 – 1B FRED McGRIFF hit
his first MLB home run off BOB STANLEY
of the BOSTON RED SOX at EXHIBITION STADIUM.
4-18-1978 – RHP REGGIE
CLEVELAND was purchased by the TEXAS RANGERS
from the BOSTON RED SOX, and was used strictly as a reliever for first
time in his career, setting personal highs with 12 saves.
4-18-1984 – DAVE COLLINS was at
his offensive best as his BLUE JAYS
subdued the BALTIMORE ORIOLES 7-1, stealing 2 bases, scoring once, with
three hits and knocking in 3 runs.
4-19-1979 – The BLUE JAYS tied
the MONTREAL EXPOS 4-4 in the 2nd Annual
PEARSON CUP Game as a 7:15pm curfew had been agreed to, and at exactly
that hour the Montreal squad left the field with Toronto still at bat
!!! To say the very least, the local fans were not amused !!!
4-20-1980 – JOEY McLAUGHLIN
earned his first save as a BLUE JAYS
reliever, BARRY BONNELL had 3 doubles and OTTO VELEZ hit a three-run
homer to lead the club to a 5-3 win over the CLEVELAND INDIANS.
4-21-1966 – FERGUSON JENKINS,
ADOLFO PHILLIPS and JOHN HERRNSTEIN were
acquired by the CHICAGO CUBS in exchange for BOB BUHL and LARRY JACKSON
who joined the PHILADELHIA PHILLIES.
4-21-1986 – Toronto and
Montreal sportswriters selected the entire BLUE
JAYS team as Canada's Baseball Man of the Year. To celebrate the BLUE
JAYS downed the TEXAS RANGERS by a 7-6 decision.
4-21-1998 – MARK McGWIRE hit
only one home run in Montreal in 1998,
with TREY MOORE being the victim on this day, as he propelled a two-run
shot deep to left center field, the 9th of his unbelievable total of 70
on the season. However, five other longballs were hit off MONTREAL
EXPOS pitchers in St. Louis.
4-22-1976 – TIM FOLI hit for
the cycle, becoming the first MONTREAL
EXPOS player ever to do so, when he homered in the eighth inning in the
completion of a game begun the day before at WRIGLEY FIELD, which had
been suspended by darkness after he had amassed a triple, double and
single. He is believed to be the only player ever to hit for the cycle
in the same game covering two days.
4-22-1978 – With CHICAGO WHITE
SOX OF LAMAR JOHNSON holding down 2B
after hitting a double, and DH RON BLOMBERG at 1B after an infield hit,
Toronto starter JIM CLANCY catches a line bunt off the bat of OF JUNIOR
MOORE and tosses to 1B JOHN MAYBERRY to get Blomberg, then Mayberry
fires over to SS LUIS GOMEZ to nail Johnson, finishing the first triple
play in BLUE JAYS history. The BLUE JAYS won the contest on solo home
run blasts from ROY HOWELL and DOUG AULT, 4-2.
4-22-1981 – 3B TIM WALLACH
became the 3000th career strikeout victim of
Hall of Fame pitcher STEVE CARLTON.

pitched his first career shutout for the
MONTREAL EXPOS versus the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, allowing only 3 hits, no
walks, while striking out 9.
4-22-1999 – C/1B PATRICK
DESCHENES was signed to his first contract by
the NEW YORK METS after being a non-drafted free agent, then went on to
hit at a .374 clip at three levels with 92 hits in 246 at-bats with
five home runs and 45 runs batted in.

mowed down the CHICAGO WHITE SOX for a
3-hit 4-0 shutout victory, with JOHN MAYBERRY leading the way with two

rookie RHP BARRY CORT made three relief
appearances this month, the best of the three against the BOSTON RED
SOX at COUNTY STADIUM when he went 1.1 innings, giving up a hit with a
strikeout in a 3-1 loss.
4-26-1980 – DAVE STIEB hurled a
5-hit 4-0 shutout against the MILWAUKEE
BREWERS. With a count of 3 balls and 2 strikes, BARRY BONNELL
absolutely creamed a giant 9th inning grand slam !!!
4-26-1997 – RHP MICHAEL JOHNSON
notched his first MLB save as a member
of the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, pitching 3 shutout innings to close out a
14-5 win over the BOSTON RED SOX.
4-26-1998 – The third time the
BLUE JAYS played in a tie game was
versus the CHICAGO WHITE SOX, when they were knotted at five after six
innings when the rains came at COMISKEY PARK, cancelling the contest,
which had to be completely replayed on 15 July 1998 as part of a TWDH.

VLADIMIR GUERRERO was hit on the hand
and in his next at-bat blasted a home run to straight away center field
for his 100th career round-tripper as a member of the MONTREAL EXPOS.
4-27-1979 – ANDRE DAWSON and
GARY CARTER both homered twice in the same
game for their MONTREAL EXPOS against the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS at
OLYMPIC STADIUM.

the 3509th career strikeout victim of
NOLAN RYAN, breaking the all-time record set originally by "THE BIG
TRAIN", WALTER JOHNSON.

4-28-1996 – The MONTREAL EXPOS
set a team record for runs in a game
with a 21-9 victory against the COLORADO ROCKIES at COORS FIELD,
collecting 20 hits and eight walks against four Rockies' pitchers,
including six doubles and three home runs. DARRIN FLETCHER and DAVID
SEGUI each hit grand slams while F.P. SANTANGELO added four hits,
including two doubles, a homer and 5 RBI, while Segui finished the
afternoon with 6 RBI and Fletcher with 5. MARK GRUDZIELANEK had his
first five-hit game while HENRY RODRIGUEZ contributed three hits and
three runs scored.
4-29-1979 – The BLUE JAYS beat
the MILWAUKEE BREWERS 5-3 in the second
game of a double-header, as JOHN MAYBERRY, RICK BOSETTI and BOB
ROBERTSON homered to assist DAVE LEMANCZYK in the win.
4-29-1981 – STEVE CARLTON
struck out TIM WALLACH in the first inning of
his PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 6-2 victory over the visiting MONTREAL EXPOS,
becoming only the sixth pitcher, and first left-hander, in MLB history
to strikeout 3000th batters.
4-29-1986 – ROGERS CLEMENS
became the first pitcher ever to record 20
strikeouts in a 9-inning game, having at least one strikeout in each
inning and fanning the side 3 times, throwing 97 fastballs of his 138
pitches.
4-30-1985 – The BLUE JAYS took
sole possession of first place, for the
first time since 25 July 1983, topping the OAKLAND A's 4-3, with TONY
FERNANDEZ hitting a 2-out single in the 9th inning, driving in the
winning run.
