9-01-1975 – GARY ROENICKE, of QUEBEC CITY, led the EASTERN LEAGUE in RBI, but set an EL record for the fewest RBI for a league leader, as he amassed only 74.

9-01-1976 – BOSTON RED SOX pitcher FERGUSON JENKINS injures his Achilles' tendon covering first base in the fifth inning against the TEXAS RANGERS, finishing with a 12-11 record.

9-02-1974 – C GARY CARTER, playing for the MEMPHIS BLUES, was selected the No. 1 receiver in Class-AAA after leading all INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE catchers in games (114), putouts (794), assists (65), double plays (15), fielding percentage (.990), and finished second to JIM RICE, of the PAWTUCKET RED SOX, with 23 homers and 83 runs batted in.

9-02-1975 – RHP JOHN MONTAGUE is selected off waivers from the MONTREAL EXPOS by the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.

9-02-1976 – ROGER FREED of the DENVER BEARS led the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION with 42 home runs, the most since MARV THRONEBERRY hit 42 for the Bears in 1956.

9-02-1978 – After joining the EXPOS in late August and losing his first two decisions, RHP SCOTT SANDERSON finally entered the win column for his first MLB win versus the SAN DIEGO PADRES, and finding this to his agreement posted three more Ws before the month was over, finishing his award-winning month of September with a 4-0 record to go with a 2.16 ERA, striking out 36 over 38 innings, to be named the EXPOS Player of the Month.

9-02-1979 – ROY HOWELL rapped out 2 singles and a home run to drive in 4 runs as his BLUE JAYS outscored the SEATTLE MARINERS 8-5. JOHN MAYBERRY set a club record with his 71st RBI of the year.

9-02-1982 – In the 4th Annual PEARSON CUP Game, played at EXHIBITION STADIUM, the MONTREAL EXPOS downed the BLUE JAYS by a 7-3 result. RHP DAVE SHIPANOFF pitches the seventh and eighth innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs, becoming first Canadian-born pitcher to appear in the game for the BLUE JAYS.

9-02-1990 – After three no-hitters into the ninth inning with two out in previous years, DAVE STIEB faces JERRY BROWNE of the CLEVELAND INDIANS in the same situation, on a sunny Sunday afternoon before a larger than normal crowd of 23640, as Browne's fly ball settles into right fielder JUNIOR FELIX's glove, the jinx is broken and Stieb posts the BLUE JAYS' first-ever no hitter, a 3-0 win, becoming the record ninth no-hitter of the 1990 season. There were no really tough plays and only a couple of well hit balls. Offensve support came from FRED McGRIFF who hit two solo home runs and MANUEL LEE who doubled home KENNY WILLIAMS in the fifth inning.

9-02-1996 – MONTREAL EXPOS C RAUL CHAVEZ hit a single for his first hit in the majors then stole second two pitches later.

9-02-1997 – RHP MIKE THURMAN made his MLB debut with the MONTREAL EXPOS in a start against BRET SABERHAGEN of the BOSTON RED SOX, getting a no-decision in a 6-5 win at OLYMPIC STADIUM.

9-03-1960 – AL CICOTTE, of the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS, in the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, pitched an 11-inning no-hit game to defeat the MONTREAL ROYALS, and in so doing ended this 1960 campaign yielding no earned runs in 56 straight innings.

9-03-1978 – In first one-hitter thrown against the TORONTO BLUE JAYS at EXHIBITION STADIUM, CHRIS KNAPP came out the 3-1 winner for his CALIFORNIA ANGELS, giving up just a homer to DH WILLIE HORTON in the second.

9-03-1981 – OF JESSE BARFIELD makes his MLB debut picking up a single, an RBI and a stolen base against the CHICAGO WHITE SOX.

DAVE STIEB and the BLUE JAYS reached milestones with a 3-1 win over the CLEVELAND INDIANS. It was Stieb's 100th career win and the 700th in the10 year history of the franchise.

9-03-1992 – OF RYAN THOMPSON picked up his first MLB hit for the NEW YORK METS against the CINCINNATI REDS.

9-03-1993 – OF RONDELL WHITE collected his first two hits in the majors off DARRYL KILE at the HOUSTON ASTROS.

9-03-1995 –
SS TONY FERNANDEZ became the first member of the NEW YORK YANKEES in 23 seasons to hit for the cycle, with BOBBY MURCER being the last before this on 8-29-1972.

9-03-1996 – RHP MIKE MORGAN is signed as a free agent by the CINCINNATI REDS, after being released by the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS on 8-28.

9-03-2001 – The EXPOS organization fielded another batting champion as CLINTON LUMBERKINGS OF JASON BAY, 21, led the MIDWEST LEAGUE with a .362 BA (115-for-318), collecting 13 home runs and 61 RBI in just 87 games. The righthanded Canadian-born hitter from Trail, British Columbia, was the 22nd round draft selection in 2000 by the EXPOS, out of GONZAGA UNIVERSITY. He closed out his season hitting safely in 14 consecutive games between 19 August-3 September, going 23-for-54 for a .426 BA, to clinch the batting title. Upon the completion of the season he joined the Canadian National Team for the World Championship Tournament held in Taipei, Korea in November.

9-03-2002 – RHP JUSTIN WAYNE made his MLB debut for the FLORIDA MARLINS in a start against the NEW YORK METS, in which he was the loser in an 11-5 result at SHEA STADIUM.

9-04-1967 – REGGIE SMITH had the finest year of his early career for the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS of the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE hitting .320 to lead the league, with 18 HR and 80 RBI.

9-04-1974 – The ST. LOUIS CARDINALS acquired the contract of IF RON HUNT on waivers from the MONTREAL EXPOS.

9-04-1981 – A 2-run double by rookie JESSE BARFIELD gave the BLUE JAYS a 6-2 triumph over DENNIS LAMP and his CHICAGO WHITE SOX teammates. DAVE STIEB had a complete game for his 8th win of the season.

9-04-1986 – CLAUDE BROCHU was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of the MONTREAL EXPOS, succeeding JOHN J. McHALE as only the second President in franchise history.

9-04-1992 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS tied an AMERCAN LEAGUE record at SKYDOME, originally set by the BOSTON RED SOX on 2 June 1901 and later equalled by the DETROIT TIGERS on 20 September 1983, by collecting 10 consecutive hits in an eight-run second inning against the MINNESOTA TWINS. With one out in the second, KELLY GRUBER reached on an infield single , followed by singles from PAT BORDERS and MANUAL LEE, scoring Gruber. DEVON WHITE doubled in a run, then ROBERTO ALOMAR followed with a two-run single. JOE CARTER tripled home Alomar, scoring on a single from DAVE WINFIELD who was thrown out at second. JOHN OLERUD singled and scored as CANDY MALDONADO then tripled. Gruber came up for his second at-bat hitting a bloop double to right scoring Maldonado after which Borders flied to center to end the inning with their BLUE JAYS holding an 8-3 lead.

9-04-1993 – Against the HOUSTON ASTROS, MONTREAL EXPOS OF RONDELL WHITE hit a rocket to center field for his first home run in the big leagues off GREG SWINDELL at the ASTRODOME.

9-04-1998 – DEVON WHITE stole third base, his 20th of the season, becoming the first player in expansion history to steal 20 and hit 20 home runs in a season.

9-04-1999 – IAN LAMPLUGH, of Victoria, British Columnia, makes his MLB Umpire debut, becoming one of only a few Canadian-born umpires in MLB history.

9-05-1968 – After the Montreal club officially adopts the name of EXPOS, GENE MAUCH is named as their first field manager.

9-05-1977 – The BLUE JAYS extended their losing streak to 10 games by dropping a doubleheader 8-0 and 6-0 over the BOSTON RED SOX.

9-05-2001 – VLADIMIR GUERRERO collects the 500th RBI of his brilliant career, driving in TERRY JONES with a third inning single in an eventual 10-4 win over the ATLANTA BRAVES.

9-05-2001 – LARRY WALKER officially took the lead in the NL batting race from MOISES ALOU, then proceeded to bat .365 through the end of the season, finishing at .350, 38 HR, 123 RBI, being the NL leader in three of the last four seasons.

At OLYMPIC STADIUM, for the first time in modern major league history, three Canadian-born players were in the starting lineup of a major league club, as pitcher DENIS BOUCHER, of Montreal, Quebec, and catcher JOE SIDDALL, of Windsor, Ontario, formed the first all-Canadian battery in the modern era, while right fielder LARRY WALKER, of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, also made a contribution in the MONTREAL EXPOS 4-3 win against the COLORADO ROCKIES. TIP O'NEILL and JOHN HUMPHRIES, for the NEW YORK METROPOLITANS in 1883, accomplished this feat originally.

MARQUIS GRISSOM hits his 100th MLB home run for the CLEVELAND INDIANS as they defeat the CHICAGO WHITE SOX.

9-06-1997 – OF RICH BUTLER made his MLB debut with the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, after having been named as the recipient of the R. HOWARD WEBSTER Award as MVP with the SYRACUSE CHIEFS.

9-06-1999 – MONTREAL EXPOS OF/1B FERNANDO SEGUIGNOL played first base in his first start in the majors, going 0-for-4 in a 6-2loss at the FLORIDA MARLINS.

9-06-2001 – JAVIER VASQUEZ is a landslide winner in NATIONAL LEAGUE Pitcher of the Month voting for August as the EXPOS ace sported a 5-1 record during that span with a sparkling 0.55 ERA in his six starts, and in his only loss he tossed a complete game 6-hitter.

9-07-1975 – 1B/DH TONY SOLAITA hit three home runs in an 11-inning contest at the CALIFORNIA ANGELS.

9-07-1977 – DAVE LEMANCZYK hurled a complete game 3-2 victory over the BOSTON RED SOX to snap the BLUE JAYS 11 game losing streak.

9-07-1979 – With PHIL HUFFMAN pitching in the CLEVELAND INDIANS's eighth with the bases loaded, TED COX grounded to 3B ROY HOWELL who stepped on the bag forcing MIKE HARGROVE, then threw to 2B LUIS GOMEZ, who then erased RICK MANNING before relay over to 1B JOHN MAYBERRY to nip Cox. TRIPLE PLAY !!! Also, RICO CARTY slugged the sixth grand slam in team history off RICK WAITS in the 5th inning at MUNICIPAL STADIUM as BLUE JAYS were eventual 9-8 winners in this exciting game.

9-07-1979 – RHP GORDON PLADSON made his MLB debut for the HOUSTON ASTROS versus the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS, allowing one hit and striking out one in an inning of relief.

9-07-1990 – SS GUILLERMO MOTA was signed as a non-drafted amateur free agent by EDDY TOLEDO of the NEW YORK METS.

9-07-1993 – Switch-hitting OF MARK WHITEN slugged his way into the MLB record books in the second game of a doubleheader versus the CINCINNATI REDS at RIVERFRONT STADIUM, as he tied MLB single-game marks with four home runs and 12 RBI in leading his ST. LOUIS CARDINALS to victory, becoming only the 12th major leaguer to ever hit four round-trippers in one contest. He also had driven in a run in the first game to tie another big-league mark with 13 RBI in a doubleheader.

9-07-1999 – RHP ERIC GAGNE made his MLB debut at the FLORIDA MARLINS, pitching six scoreless innings, striking out eight, the most by a LOS ANGELES DODGERS pitcher making his MLB debut since 1992, collecting his first big league hit, a single, in the third inning, facing RYAN DEMPSTER in a rare matchup of two Canadian-born hurlers, which marked the first time two Canadian-born pitchers faced each other in a NATIONAL LEAGUE game since REGGIE CLEVELAND (ST. LOUIS) and FERGUSON JENKINS (CUBS) met on 7-28-1973. Both Gagne and Dempster were roommates when they played for TEAM CANADA in the 1993 Junior World Championships in Windsor, Ontario.

RHP AARON MYETTE made his MLB debut for the CHICAGO WHITE SOX allowing one run in two innings of relief at the ANAHEIM ANGELS.

9-08-1981 – JIM FANNING was named as field manager of the MONTREAL EXPOS, replacing DICK WILLIAMS. After losing his first three games as manager, he turned it around and won 16 of the last 24 games, clinching their second season title in the final regular season game on 3 October at the NEW YORK METS.

9-08-1984 – BILL STONEMAN was appointed Vice President, Baseball Administration, of the MONTREAL EXPOS.

LLOYD MOSEBY was selected as the AMERICAN LEAGUE Player of the Week for 2-8 September, having collected 10 hits, including 5 home runs, and 11 RBI over this time frame.

9-08-1996 – OF TERRY JONES made his MLB debut as a pinch-runner with the COLORADO ROCKIES at the HOUSTON ASTROS.

9-09-1945 – DICK FOWLER, of the PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS, pitched a 1-0 no hitter against the ST. LOUIS BROWNS.

9-09-1974 – The MLB debut of OF JOHN BALAZ of the CALIFORNIA ANGELS was rather inauspicious as he was announced as a pinch-hitter then removed after a pitching change, but when he did get a chance to swing the he collected seven hits in his first 17 at-bats.

RHP HAL DUES won his MLB debut versus the PITTSBURGH PIRATES at THREE RIVERS STADIUM.

9-09-1978 – LARRY J. CHIASSON, the Director of Public Relations for the MONTREAL EXPOS from the club's inception in 1968, passed away after a brief illness. "Larry combined two extraordinary qualities, the enjoyment of his work, with exceptional expertise. He was recognized as a top professional in communications and a man dedicated to the game of baseball. The club and the baseball world will be poorer for his passing," stated JOHN McHALE, President of the MONTREAL EXPOS.

9-09-1978 – The first triple play against the BLUE JAYS happened with SCOTT McGREGOR pitching in the BLUE JAYS sixth inning, DOUG AULT and DAVE McKAY hit consecutive singles to putting runners on first and second. RICK CERONE followed with a hard grounder to DOUG DeCINCES, who stepped on third for the first out, then threw to RICH DAUER at second for the forceout. Dauer then fired the ball to first baseman EDDIE MURRAY, beating Cerone to the bag. The Orioles wen on to win this contest, 4-0.

9-09-1985 – JIMMY KEY posted his 11th win as a starter, a club record for lefthanders, and TOM HENKE earned his 10th save as their BLUE JAYS dropped the DETROIT TIGERS in a 5-3 result.

9-09-1992 – ROBIN YOUNT reached the 3000th hit plateau with a single off JOSE MESA of the CLEVELAND INDIANS, becoming only the 17th player to ever attain the 3000 hit plateau, as he singled to right field in the seventh inning.

9-09-1998 – RYAN RADMANOVICH strokes his first MLB home run as his SEATLE MARINERS down the TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS in a 5-2 result.

9-10-1968 – LHP DAVE HARTMAN, a free agent pitcher, becomes the very first player to sign a contract with the new MONTREAL EXPOS.

9-10-1977 – The cellar-dwelling BLUE JAYS blow into YANKEE STADIUM and trounce the NEW YORK YANKEES, 19-3, on the strength of a 9 RBI day by 3B ROY HOWELL, whose 5-hit performance includes 2 home runs and 2 doubles, and the 16 run margin of victory remains a Toronto franchise mark, while the 19 runs were the
most scored against a YANKEES squad in over 50 years !!!

9-10-1980 – BILL GULLICKSON, 21, struck out 18, establishing a MLB record for a rookie, as his MONTREAL EXPOS downed the CHICAGO CUBS, 4-2, keeping them one-half game ahead of the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES in the NATIONAL LEAGUE East. The 18 Ks was one shy of the MLB record of 19 held by STEVE CARLTON, TOM SEAVER and NOLAN RYAN, with BOB FELLER and RON GUIDRY being the only other pitchers to fan 18 in a game.

9-11-1961 – At the age of 17, RUSTY STAUB was signed to his first professional contract by the HOUSTON COLT .45s.

9-11-1968 – JIM McANDREW, of the NEW YORK METS, defeated FERGUSON JENKINS, of the CHICAGO CUBS, for his fifth 1-0 loss of the season, tying a MLB record as his season fell to 17-14.

9-11-1979 – After suffering 15 straight losses to the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, the BLUE JAYS ripped the O's 3-1, as ALFREDO GRIFFIN had 3 of the club's 5 base hits in the win.

9-11-1980 – In a 6-5 victory over the CHICAGO CUBS, RON LeFLORE swiped his 91st stolen base of the season and RODNEY SCOTT, both of whom were playing for the MONTREAL EXPOS, stole his 58th, breaking the MLB record for stolen bases by teammates in one season, previously held by LOU BROCK and BAKE McBRIDE with the1974 ST. LOUIS CARDINALS.

PETE ROSE became the career hits leader with hit number 4192, breaking the mark of TY COBB, lining a 2-1 pitch to left-center field, off the late ERIC SHOW, for a single in the first inning, on the 57th anniversary of TY COBB's last game in the major leagues.

9-11-1986 – In the first game of a doubleheader against the NEW YORK YANKEES, SS TONY FERNANDEZ banged out his 186th base hit of the year to surpass DAMASO GARCIA's 1982 total of 185 hits. In the nightcap, JESSE BARFIELD set a new tesam high for homers when he launched his 31st round-tripper into orbit, topping JOHN MAYBERRY's 1980 performance of 30 home runs.

9-11-1998 – KEVIN MALONE, now the ex-Assistant General Manager of the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, is named as the new General Manager of the LOS ANGELES DODGERS.

9-11-1998 – OF VLADIMIR GUERRERO hit his 36th home run on the season against the NEW YORK METS in a 5-1 win, to tie the MONTREAL EXPOS team record, breaking it the following day in a 5-3 victory over the Mets.

9-11-2000 – VLADIMIR GUERRERO had six hits in a double-header at VETERANS STADIUM against the PHILAEDELPHIA PHILLIES, tying an EXPOS club record, then was ejected for the second time within a month after his last at-bat for arguing balls and strikes.

9-12-1979 – JIM BEATTIE gave up the 3000th hit to CARL YASTRZEMSKI in his 10936 at-bat in game number 2848.

9-12-1980 - JOEY McLAUGHLIN pitched the BLUE JAYS to a 7-5 victory over the BALTIMORE ORIOLES. The win marked the first time that the team had reached 60 wins in one season.

9-13-1977 – After compiling a 13-7 mark with Class-AAA TIDEWATER TIDES, RHP ROY LEE JACKSON was brought up by the NEW YORK METS on 9-12, making his MLB debut against the MONTREAL EXPOS at OLYMPIC STADIUM this evening.

9-13-1983 – DAN QUISENBERRY broke JOHN HILLER's all-time single season save mark, recording the final two outs of this 4-2 victory for his KANSAS CITY ROYALS against the CALIFORNIA ANGELS, for his 39th save of the campaign.

9-13-1983 – NEW YORK METS C MIKE FITZGERALD hit a home run in his first at-bat in the major leagues, at the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.

9-13-1984 – GEORGE BELL hit two doubles in a game against the NEW YORK YANKEES setting a new franchise high of 36 doubles in one year breaking the mark set by RICK BOSETTI with 35 in 1979.

9-14-1985 – The BLUE JAYS earned a club record 90th victory in one season as JIMMY KEY tossed a complete game 7-4 decision against the NEW YORK YANKEES and RANCE MULLINIKS had the game-winning RBI.

9-14-1986 – BOB BRENLY, of the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS, a catcher playing third base, tied a MLB record with four errors in one inning, however, he atoned for these errors with a home run in the fifth, a game-tying two-run single in the seventh, and a two-out game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth, as his team defeated the ATLANTA BRAVES, 7-6.

9-14-1987 – The BLUE JAYS set a MLB record by exploding for 10 home runs against the BALTIMORE ORIOLES at EXHIBITION STADIUM, with the final score being 18-3 on the strength of longballs off the bats of ERNIE WHITT (3), RANCE MULLINIKS (2), GEORGE BELL (2), LLOYD MOSEBY, ROB DUCEY and FRED McGRIFF. MIKE HART hit one home run for the O's to tie the two team MLB mark of 11. SS CAL RIPKEN JR had his consecutive-innings streak stopped at 8243 when he was replaced by RON WASHINGTON in the eighth inning.

9-14-1990 – DAVE STEWART won his 20th game of the season, by a 9-1 result, over the MINNESOTA TWINS, to become the first pitcher since JIM PALMER (1975-1978) to post four consecutive 20-win seasons.

OF FELIPE CRESPO hit his first MLB home run for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS off JAMIE MOYER of the SEATTLE MARINERS in the KINGDOME.

9-14-1999 – RHP JAVIER VAZQUEZ pitched a one-hit 3-0 shutout against KEVIN BROWN of the LOS ANGELES DODGERS at DODGER STADIUM.

9-15-1977 – Fiery Orioles manager EARL WEAVER pulls his team off the field in the fifth inning, at EXHIBITION STADIUM, citing that the tarpaulin covering the BLUE JAYS bullpen represented a hazard to his players. Toronto is awarded a 9-0 victory in the first forfeited game since June 1974, the team's only forfeit over its first 26 seasons. To this point, JIM CLANCY had tossed a two-hitter, with BLUE JAYS ahead by 4-0 score, having issued a double to AL BUMBRY and a single to DAVE SKAGGS in the third.

9-15-1982 – OF DOUG FROBEL, of the PITTSBURGH PIRATES, singled off fellow Canadian FERGUSON JENKINS for his first hit in the big leagues.

9-15-1985 – The BLUE JAYS dropped the NEW YORK YANKEES 8-5 to take 3 out of 4 games in a crucial series in New York as DOYLE ALEXANDER earned the win. The AMERICAN LEAGUE attendance record for a four date series was set during these games between 9-12 and 9-15 with 214510.

9-15-1988 – Recalled after the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION playoffs, LHP RANDY JOHNSON won his MLB debut for the MONTREAL EXPOS over the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

9-15-1998 – OF VLADIMIR GUERRERO clubbed his 38th homer and final home run, along with a double, in a 7-4 loss to the visiting FLORIDA MARLINS, to top the MONTREAL EXPOS franchise extra-base hit record with 80.

9-16-1968 – The re-sodding of JARRY PARK with marion blue grass gets under way.

9-16-1976 – In his MLB debut, RHP LARRY LANDRETH became the first Canadian-born pitcher to start and win a game in the NATIONAL LEAGUE in almost three years, when he beat the CHICAGO CUBS, 4-3.

9-16-1977 – In his first MLB start, LHP DAN SCHATZEDER received the decision in his first win pitching for the MONTREAL EXPOS over the PITTSBURGH PIRATES, tossing 6.1 shutout innings for the victory, then increased his scoreless string to 17.1 innings by blanking the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS on 22 September, at OLYMPIC STADIUM, in which he was also the hitting hero, with a two-out single in the seventh inning that snapped the scoreless tie.

9-16-1979 – The largest crowd in MONTREAL EXPOS history, 59282, was in attendance when the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS visited OLYMPIC STADIUM, winning the first contest 4-3 but losing the nightcap 5-1.

9-16-1981 – OF TERRY FRANCONA slammed his first MLB home run off BRUCE SUTER as the EXPOS came back from a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 in extra innings over the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS.

9-16-1982 – REGGIE JACKSON committed a two-base error on a fly ball off the bat of ALFREDO GRIFFIN to eventually score the winning run in the 12th inning as the BLUE JAYS went on to defeat the CALIFORNIA ANGELS by a 2-1 mark.

9-16-1982 – JEAN AUCOIN, a respected sports journalist his entire adult life, passed away on this date at the age of 47. He joined the Montreal daily LA PRESSE in January 1979 and worked the MONTREAL EXPOS beat until his death, having begun his sportswriting career in 1959 working at the PETIT JOURNAL and at MONTREAL-MATIN as sports editor. He was a past-president of the Montreal chapter of the BBWAA, of which he was a member since 1970.

9-16-1983 – OF GENE ROOF was obtained by the MONTREAL EXPOS on waivers from the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS. His brothers ADRIAN, DAVID and PAUL all played professional baseball and his older brother PHIL was a long-time catcher in MLB with the BRAVES, ANGELS, INDIANS, A's, TWINS, WHITE SOX and BLUE JAYS in 1977.

9-16-1995 – OF YAMIL BENITEZ is recalled by MONTREAL EXPOS, after OTTAWA LYNX playoffs, making his MLB debut collecting two hits against the HOUSTON ASTROS, a single and triple.

9-17-1979 – The BLUE JAYS rallied for 3 runs in the 9th to upset the BOSTON RED SOX, 5-4. RICK CERONE had a 2-run double to tie the game then came around to score the winning run on a throwing error.

9-17-1991 – MONTREAL EXPOS OF LARRY WALKER stroked one of the longest home runs ever at SHEA STADIUM, measured out at 425+ feet, in a MONTREAL EXPOS win over the NEW YORK METS.

9-17-1993 – MONTREAL EXPOS OF CURTIS PRIDE, collected his first MLB hit, a pinch-hit, two-run double in the seventh inning vs the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, which sparked a five minute standing ovation at OLYMPIC STADIUM, becoming only the 5th deaf player in MLB history.

9-17-1995 – TORONTO BLUE JAYS OF ROBERT PEREZ hit his first MLB home run at COUNTY STADIUM against the MILWAUKEE BREWERS, after his 9-1-1995 callup from Class-AAA SYRACUSE CHIEFS where he had received the R. HOWARD WEBSTER Award as the Most Valuable Player.

9-17-1997 – In a game at the SAN DIEGO PADRES, COLORADO ROCKIES OF LARRY WALKER reached the 200th home run plateau.

9-17-2001 – In the bottom of the 5th inning, JAVIER VAZQUEZ is hit by a RYAN DEMPSTER pitch, forcing him to leave the game in what a later CT scan reveals were fractures in and around the bones that form the right eye socket, shelving him for the remainder of the 2001 campaign, in which he finished with 223.2 IP, standing 9th in the NL with a 3.45 ERA and a .235 opponents batting average.

9-18-1977 –– ROY HOWELL and BOB BAILOR each had 2 hits and 2 RBI to lead their BLUE JAYS to a 7-4 win over the CLEVELAND INDIANS and PETE VUCKOVICH saved his 8th game of the season.

9-19-1999 – TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS 1B FRED McGRIFF became the 2nd player in MLB history to hit 30 home runs with 4 differest teams (BLUE JAYS-PADRES-ATLANTA-TAMPA BAY) when he touched one off against JOHN BURKETT of the TEXAS RANGERS.

9-19-2000 – JOSE VIDRO set a career-high with his 46th double at the FLORIDA MARLINS while also tying an EXPOS franchise mark for second basemen with his 188th hit of the campaign originally set by DAVE CASH in 1977.

9-20-1982 – The BLUE JAYS play their fastest-ever nine-inning game, to this point, defeating the visiting MINNESOTA TWINS, 3-0, in only one hour and thirty-three minutes.

9-20-1983 – Not to be outdone, WILLIE UPSHAW enters the BLUE JAYS record books as the first 100 RBI man in franchise history, helping his team achieve its first-ever winning season.

9-20-1985 – DAMASO GARCIA was given the ROBERT CLEMENTE AWARD, presented to the Latin American ballplayer who best perpetuates the memory of one of baseball's all-time greats.

9-21-1969 – DETROIT TIGERS LHP MIKE KILKENNY hurled consecutive shutouts over the INDIANS and RED SOX on 9-17

9-21-1979 – The NEW YORK YANKEES had men on first and second in the bottom of the 7th inning, with TOM UNDERWOOD on the mound for the BLUE JAYS, when their batter lined a hard shot that was grabbed by BLUE JAYS 2B DAVE McKAY, who quickly threw to first to double off ROY STAIGER. 1B CRAIG KUSICK then fired the ball back to second nabbing CHRIS CHAMBLISS. TRIPLE PLAY !!! The YANKEES batsman who initiated all of this fiery action was a young infielder by the name of DAMASO GARCIA.

9-21-1982 – DAVE STIEB tossed a complete game for his 15th win of the year to beat the MINNESOTA TWINS 5-1. GARTH IORG had three hits driving in two runs.

9-21-1998 – OF BRIAN SIMMONS made his MLB debut with the CHICAGO WHITE SOX at the MINNESOTA TWINS.

9-22-1976 - The BLUE JAYS appointed ROY HARTSFIELD as the club's first manager. He ran the team over the first three years posting a won-lost record of 166-318.

9-22-1987 – RHP JUAN GUZMAN was acquired by the TORONTO BLUE JAYS from the LOS ANGELES DODGERS in exchange for IF MIKE SHARPERSON.

9-26-1998 – OF BRIAN SIMMONS became just the third player in CHICAGO WHITE SOX history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game at the KANSAS CITY ROYALS, and at five days from his MLB debut became the fastest player to ever accomplish the feat.

9-26-2000 – VLADIMIR GUERRERO hit an estimated 452-foot home run off RYAN DEMPSTER of the FLORIDA MARLINS for his 44th round-tripper of the campaign, also scoring two runs in the contest to reach the 100 plateau in a third straight season.

9-27-1982 – ALAN ASHBY belted a home run from both sides of the plate in one game for his HOUSTON ASTROS.

9-27-1985 – The BLUE JAYS set a Canadian MLB record winning their 96th decision of the season. DAMASO GARCIA, JESSE BARFIELD, CECIL FIELDER and LLOYD MOSEBY all slammed solo home runs to top the MILWAUKEE BREWERS by a 5-1 result.

9-27-1993 – The BLUE JAYS clinch their third straight AMERICAN LEAGUE East title. Six days later ROBERTO ALOMAR locks up third place in the batting race, as JOHN OLERUD, PAUL MOLITOR and he finish first, second and third - the first time three team members will accomplish such a feat in over 100 years of MLB history.

9-27-1998 – TORONTO BLUE JAYS IF KEVIN WITT recorded his first hit in the majors, an infield single, off JUSTIN THOMPSON of the DETROIT TIGERS.

OF JOHN BALAZ made two outstanding plays in left field during the third no-hitter for NOLAN RYAN, twice racing into the gap in left-center field to make great over-the-shoulder catches.

9-28-1987 – PHIL NIEKRO appears in his final MLB game, for the ATLANTA BRAVES, pitching one last time for the team he spent his first 19 seasons with.

9-28-1992 – NEW YORK METS OF RYAN THOMPSON had his first multi-homer game in the big leagues against the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.

9-28-1995 – GREG HARRIS, with the MONTREAL EXPOS, became the first pitcher in MLB history to pitch with both hands, facing four batters, two from his usual right side and two from the left, in the ninth inning of a 9-7 loss to the CINCINNATI REDS. He utilized a specially-made glove that had six fingers.

9-28-1998 – OF TONY TARASCO belted a pinch-hit grand slam for his CINCINNATI REDS against the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

9-29-1971 –
In the sixth inning of the MONTREAL EXPOS 6-5 victory against the CHICAGO CUBS, MILT PAPPAS hit RON HUNT with a pitch, the 50th HBP for Hunt on the season, still a MLB record.

9-29-1976 – JOHN MONTEFUSCO threw a 9-0 no-hitter for his SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS at the ATLANTA BRAVES.

9-29-1984 – The BLUE JAYS claim second place, their highest finish to-date, behind the DETROIT TIGERS, who had rocketed out of the gate with a 35-5 start, having hung onto first place all year.

9-29-1985 – Smashing 22 base hits to hand the MILWAUKEE BREWERS a 13-5 loss the BLUE JAYS pulled off a 3-game sweep, outscoring the opposition 24-7.

9-30-1973 – After suffering a major heart attack in January 1971, missing all of season and half of 1972, LHP JOHN HILLER battled back in 1973 to set MLB relief record with 38 saves, appearing in record 65 games compiling a 10-5 mark and a 1.44 ERA, with 124 Ks in 125 innings pitched. He was recipient of the Hutch Award, Comeback Player of the Year Award, Fireman of the Year Award, Tiger of the Year, King Tiger, plus numerous salutes by sports, civic and health groups.

9-30-1982 – JESSE BARFIELD stepped on a 400-foot solo homer, which was the game-winning RBI as the BLUE JAYS edged the MINNESOTA TWINS 6-4. BUCK MARTINEZ hit his career-high 10th home run of the season.

9-30-1988 – DAVE STIEB becomes the only BLUE JAYS pitcher, and the sixth modern-day pitcher, to throw back-to-back-to-back shutout one hitters, but loses all these chances at a no-hitter on clutch ninth-inning hits, on 9-18, 9-24 and 9-30.

9-30-1989 – After battling the BALTIMORE ORIOLES the entire month, the BLUE JAYS clinch their second AMERICAN LEAGUE East title with a 4-3 win. They will, however, bow out of the ALCS in 5 games to the powerhouse OAKLAND ATHLETICS.

9-30-1993 – MONTREAL EXPOS outfielder CURTIS PRIDE belted a ninth inning, game-winning, two-run pinch-hit home run off RICHIE LEWIS of the FLORIDA MARLINS for his first MLB home run.

9-30-1999 – RHP GARY GLOVER made his MLB debut with the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, tossing a scoreless inning, allowing a walk, at the CLEVELAND INDIANS.

9-30-2000 – The MONTREAL EXPOS original English-language radio voice, DAVE VAN HORNE, broadcast his final game with the club after a 32-year association with the team.
