FRED McGRIFF became the fourth hitter

8-14-1997 – IF GREG COLBRUNN is

a pair of solo home runs versus the
COLORADO ROCKIES at COORS FIELD, becoming only the third MONTREAL EXPOS
shortstop in club history to ever do so, with BRET BARBERIE being the
first to accomplish this feat, doing so as a rookie from both sides of
the plate on 8-2-1991, while MARK GRUDZIELANEK connected in his first
two at-bats on 5-13-1998 at 3-COM PARK versus the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.
Blum was one of four batters in that game to hit a pair of home runs,
tying a MLB record for just the third time, with the others being DANTE
BICHETTE, TODD HELTON and EDGAR CLEMENTE.
8-15-1872 – The MAPLE LEAF
CLUB of Guelph, Ontario, the Canadian
Champions, play the MUTUAL CLUB of NEW YORK on the UNION GROUNDS, with
the Canadian group having begun their American tour in Baltimore on the
12TH, losing 25-5. On the 14TH they lost to the ATHLETICS of
PHILADELPHIA, 35-8, then today in a much closer game they lost to the
MUTUAL CLUB of NEW YORK, 9-4.
8-15-1978 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS sent the 'Beeg Mon', RICO CARTY to
the OAKLAND ATHLETICS for DH WILLIE HORTON and RHP PHIL HUFFMAN. Carty
played two seasons for Toronto, belting 32 homers and collecting 123
RBI.
8-15-1982 – The MONTREAL EXPOS
and PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES drew 211600
fans to a 5-game, 4-date series at OLYMPIC STADIUM, between 12-15
August 1982. That total was the third highest in MLB history for a
4-date series and the highest since 1963 when the LOS ANGELES DODGERS
drew 219948 for a 4-date series with the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.

history at the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS when
he became the 14TH pitcher in MLB history to strikeout the first four
batters in one inning and the 37th hurler to strikeout four in
one-inning, the sixth in 1999.
8-17-2001 – JEFF FRYE hit for
the cycle at SKYDOME going 4-for-4 with
three runs batted in, having tripled in the second inning, then doubled
in the fifth inning. In the sixth he hit a two-run home run and in the

the second ninth-hitting batter to accomplish this feat since 1978 when

west of Ontario to appear in a game for the MONTREAL EXPOS. He allowed
one unearned run on just two hits in 6 innings, leaving the game with a
2-1 lead as his EXPOS held on for a 3-2 victory, and also collected his
first hit in MLB in the 5th inning and later scored his first run.

to be an organized baseball first, TIM
RAINES and TIM RAINES JR face each other in a doubleheader between the
OTTAWA LYNX and ROCHESTER RED WINGS of the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, with

going 1-for-4.

no-hitter he tossed in one year, JOHN
PRUDHOMME threw the seventh no-hitter in TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS franchise

signed with the CLEVELAND INDIANS as a non-drafted free agent at the

8-22-1975 – 3B DAVE McKAY made
his MLB debut with the MINNESOTA TWINS,

off VERN RUHLE of the DETROIT TIGERS, in an 8-4 win, becoming the 43RD
player to do so and the 20TH in the AL. He then proceeded to hit safely

only the second Canadian-born player to play with the Twins, the other

coach JERRY ZIMMERMAN. Since 1910, this was only the fifth time in the
20TH century, and the first since 1941, where active players or coaches

club record by blasting his fourth homer
in 4 consecutive games as his TORONTO BLUE JAYS frustrated the
MINNESOTA TWINS 4-3, in the 600TH win for BOBBY COX as a major league
manager.

game in TORONTO BLUE JAYS history was also
at the CLEVELAND INDIANS where play was halted after nine innings due

hit a two-run homer on 20 August at San Diego to reach the 20TH home

club mark in 1997 for home runs by a second baseman.

POWELL off first base through use of the hidden ball trick in the first

RHP PHIL HUFFMAN tosses second one-hitter
in franchise history, a 7-0 win over the OAKLAND ATHLETICS, as JIM
ESSIAN has only safety in game. 3B ROY HOWELL hit the fifth grand slam
in team history, and his second on the season, off CRAIG MINETTO in the
sixth inning at EXHIBITION STADIUM.
8-27-1979 – It was not to be
for DETROIT TIGERS LHP JOHN HILLER needed only five more
appearances to become all-time Tigers pitching leader when shoulder
problems sidelined him for balance of campaign, later forcing him to
retire, finishing at 4-7 with 5.22 ERA in 79 innings pitched. Lifetime
he was 86-76, 2.84 ERA, 1036 strikeouts, 125 saves over 545 games.
8-27-1986 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS swept the CLEVELAND INDIANS 3-2 and
6-3 in a doubleheader. TOM HENKE picked up saves in both games, his
31ST and 32ND as a TORONTO BLUE JAYS reliever, a new team mark for
career saves.

tossed his first MLB complete game against
the BALTIMORE ORIOLES on his way to being named THE SPORTING NEWS AL

season game in their first twenty seasons. DAVE STIEB batted against
the MINNESOTA TWINS on this date but was playing in the outfield at the
time, having gone in to play left field in the 15TH inning of a
suspended game, which had originally started on 8-28, and in this only
time at the plate he flied out to center field, playing one inning and
having no fielding chances as the TORONTO BLUE JAYS lost 7-5.

YANKEES 4-0 shutout win over the CALIFORNIA
ANGELS, DON BAYLOR is hit by a pitch for the 190TH time, by RHP KIRK
McCASKILL, breaking the existing AMERICAN LEAGUE record of 189 set by
MINNIE MINOSO.

his 17TH consecutive relief win for the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.
8-30-1961 – The WINNIPEG
MAROONS, in the NORTHERN LEAGUE, extended
their consecutive loss streak to 17 in a row with a double-header

reversed the third and fourth hitters in their lineup, with ANDRES
GALARRAGA batting instead of DANTE BICHETTE, grounding out to end the
inning, who then led off the second with an infield single, eventually
scoring their first run. The MONTREAL EXPOS did not protest and
eventually won this contest, 14-3.
8-31-1997 – LARRY WALKER
blasted a 493-foot home run into the third
deck, the longest shot ever hit by a COLORADO ROCKIES hitter at COORS
