8-01-1957 – GLEN GORBOUS, a former REDS and PHILLIES outfielder, now with the OMAHA CARDINALS of the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION, heaved a baseball 445' 10", on the fly, setting a new world distance record, which still stands. The former mark had been set, on 27 August 1956, by OF DON GRATE of the MINNEAPOLIS MILLERS.

8-01-1962 – BILL MONBOUQUETTE of the BOSTON RED SOX pitched a no-hitter to defeat the CHICAGO WHITE SOX by a 1-0 result at COMISKEY PARK.

8-01-1972 – In a doubleheader against the ATLANTA BRAVES, SAN DIEGO PADRES 1B NATE COLBERT hit five home runs, driving in 13 runs on 7 hits in 9 at-bats, scoring 7 times and 22 total bases in a doubleheader broke old record of 21 set by STAN MUSIAL on 5-2-1954. Colbert was 8 and in the stands that day. "When I hit the fourth homer, I remembered I was in BUSCH STADIUM that afternoon. I never thought anyone would ever equal that record, certainly not me."

8-01-1976 – RHP HAL DUES threw a six-inning rain-shortened no-hitter against POMPANO while with the WEST PALM BEACH EXPOS in the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE.

8-01-1978 – PETE ROSE went 0-for-4 against ATLANTA BRAVES pitchers LARRY McWILLIAMS and GENE GARBER to end his 44-game hitting streak as the ATLANTA BRAVES defeated his CINCINNATI REDS by a 16-4 result.

8-02-1974 – DETROIT TIGERS RHP DAVE LEMANCZYK recorded his first MLB victory in first big league start against MILWAUKEE BREWERS, 4-1. On the year he made 19 relief appearances with three starts, setting a 2-1 record with a 3.99 ERA.

8-02-1983 – More than 45100 fans watched the TORONTO BLUE JAYS sweep a doubleheader from the NEW YORK YANKEES by 10-9 and 13-6 results. LLOYD MOSEBY had five hits, including 2 homers and 3 RBI.

8-02-1989 – 1B/OF LEE MAZZILLI was acquired off waivers by the TORONTO BLUE JAYS from the NEW YORK METS.

8-02-1991 – BRET BARBERIE became the second switch hitter in MONTREAL EXPOS franchise history to have homered from both sides of the plate in the same game at OLYMPIC STADIUM.

8-02-1999 – RHP JEFF ZIMMERMAN by compiling a 9-0 mark between 14 April and 2 August 1999 had the most overall wins without a defeat by a TEXAS RANGERS pitcher at the start of a season, tying him for second among AMERICAN LEAGUE relievers, one shy of the team record for rookie relief pitchers set in 1997, and tying 2 AL records, most wins by a relief pitcher at start of career and most consecutive wins for a rookie reliever, both dating to 15 April to 15 August 1926.

8-05-1976 – In an example of a home run being lost to rain, MONTREAL EXPOS 2B WAYNE GARRETT homered off OSCAR ZAMORA of the CHICAGO CUBS in the bottom of the first inning with no one on base in the second game of a doubleheader, with heavy rain causing the game to be scrubbed after just an inning and a half.

8-05-1979 – In the first game of a doubleheader in which the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES defeated the PITTSBURGH PIRATES, 12-8, PETE ROSE collected his 2427TH career single to break the long-standing NATIONAL LEAGUE mark of HONUS WAGNER.

8-05-1980 – MONTREAL EXPOS Manager DICK WILLIAMS became the 32ND manager in MLB history to record his 1000TH win in a victory over the NEW YORK METS at OLYMPIC STADIUM.

8-05-1984 – CLIFF JOHNSON hit his 19TH career pinch home run, which turned out to be the game-winner, to set a new MLB record as his TORONTO BLUE JAYS downed the BALTIMORE ORIOLES by a 4-3 result at MEMORIAL STADIUM, and they set a team record with 7 stolen bases in the game, even though none of these swipes figured in the scoring. DAVE COLLINS led the way with a personal high four steals, while WILLIE UPSHAW collected two stolen bases and LLOYD MOSEBY picked up the other one.

8-06-1985 – A baseball player strike started as thirteen MLB games, including the TORONTO BLUE JAYS against the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, were cancelled.

8-06-1993 – ROBERT LANE "BOB" MILLER, the initial pitching coach for the TORONTO
BLUE JAYS from 1977-1979, was killed at the age of 54 in an automobile accident in Rancho Bernardo, California. At the time of his death he held the MLB mark for appearances with the most teams in the big leagues, 10, having pitched with the CARDINALS, METS, DODGERS, TWINS, INDIANS, WHITE SOX, CUBS, PADRES, PIRATES, and TIGERS. 8-06-1999 – TONY GWYNN went 4-for-5, singling in the first inning in his first at-bat off starter DAN SMITH, to become the 22ND NATIONAL LEAGUE batsman to attain the 3000 hit plateau, as his SAN DIEGO PADRES defeated the MONTREAL EXPOS in OLYMPIC STADIUM by a 12-10 final.

8-07-1976 – RHP STEVE LUEBBER came within one strike of a no-hitter over the TEXAS RANGERS at ARLINGTON STADIUM when ROY HOWELL lined a clean single to centerfield in the bottom of the ninth in a 3-1 win for his MINNESOTA TWINS.

8-07-1978 – The NEW YORK YANKEES 19TH selection in the free-agent draft on 6-7-78, RHP DON COOPER wasted little time in hurling a 5-0 no-hitter for his FORT LAUDERDALE YANKEES over the FORT MYERS ROYALS in the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE action.

8-07-1979 – LHP TOM UNDERWOOD hurled his second two-hitter, this time emerging as the winner in a 3-2 win over the KANSAS CITY ROYALS, as GEORGE BRETT singled in the second, and HAL McRAE cracked a homer in the third.

8-07-1985 – The player strike ended. The TORONTO BLUE JAYS prepared to resume play, leading their nearest AMERICAN LEAGUE East rivals, DETROIT TIGERS and NEW YORK YANKEES, by 9 games.

8-07-1998 – C JOE SIDDALL, now with the DETROIT TIGERS, hit his first, and only, MLB home run off JEFF FASSERO of the SEATTLE MARINERS.

8-07-1999 – CHRIS HANEY gave up the 3000TH hit to WADE BOGGS in his 9151ST at-bat in game number 2430, becoming the first player to ever hit a home run for his 3000TH hit, with a two-run shot in his TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS 15-10 loss to the CLEVELAND INDIANS. Boggs had already hit a pair of RBI singles when he connected in the 6th inning.

8-08-1968 – JARRY PARK is approved by JEAN DRAPEAU, Mayor of Montreal, for interim use by the MONTREAL EXPOS, telling NATIONAL LEAGUE President WARREN GILES that a new stadium will be built and ready for the 1972 baseball season.

8-08-1984 DAVE COLLINS had 2 doubles, a single and 3 RBI in pacing his TORONTO BLUE JAYS to a 7-2 win over the TEXAS RANGERS, with ERNIE WHITT and TONY FERNANDEZ both smashing home runs.

8-10-1935 – NEW YORK YANKEES OF GEORGE SELKIRK drives in eight runs, one short of the AMERICAN LEAGUE record of JIMMIE FOXX, on two home runs and a single.

8-10-1981 – Players return to work and kick off the second half of the 1981 season with the All-Star Game in Cleveland, with DAVE STIEB being the lone TORONTO BLUE JAYS representative.

8-10-1986 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS nipped the TEXAS RANGERS 8-7 in 10 innings when RICK LEACH hit a sac-fly which scored RON SHEPHERD. Once again MARK EICHHORN shut-down the opposition with 3 perfect innings.

8-11-1961 – The VANCOUVER MOUNTIES, of the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE, pilferred nine bases in one inning against the SALT LAKE CITY BEES, pulling two triple steals in the frame, in which they scored five times.

8-11-1980 – 1B RANDY BASS was acquired by the SAN DIEGO PADRES from the MONTREAL EXPOS for RHP JOHN D'AQUISTO, and in his first official at-bat as a Padre hit a 400-foot home run on 9-9-1980 in a 12-5 win at JACK MURPHY STADIUM.

8-11-1984 – In the bottom of the ninth with the BALTIMORE ORIOLES leading by a 2-1 margin, GEORGE BELL blasted a rocket of a home run over the fence for a game-winning 2-run homer.

8-11-1994 – TORONTO BLUE JAYS defeat the NEW YORK YANKEES 8-7 in 13 innings in what will turn out to be the final game in their 1994 season.

8-12-1913 – The JERSEY CITY SKEETERS and TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS played a 20-inning scoreless tie in the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, as BUNN HEARN, who once pitched in the majors, went the distance for the Maple Leafs. A year earlier he had hit three home runs in a game, including two in one inning for the SPRINGFIELD WATCHMAKERS in the THREE-I LEAGUE.

8-12-1976 – METRO BASEBALL LIMITED directors officially adopted the name TORONTO BLUE JAYS, from over 4000 names and 30000 entries in a Name The Team Contest, to become the second team to ever use that name, as in 1944 and 1945 the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES changed their name to BLUE JAYS.

8-12-1985 – OF DOUG FROBEL was purchased by the MONTREAL EXPOS from the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

8-12-1994 – Major League Baseball players go out on strike, halting the 1994 season.

8-12-1995 – C PAT BORDERS was acquired by the HOUSTON ASTROS from the KANSAS CITY ROYALS for RHP RICK HUISMAN.

8-12-1998 – MONTREAL EXPOS C BOB HENLEY blasted his first big league home run off PEDRO ASTACIO of the COLORADO ROCKIES at COORS FIELD, an opposite field shot over the right field fence, in a 3-2 loss.

8-12-2001 – LARRY WALKER scored his 666TH run as a member of the COLORADO ROCKIES, passing DANTE BICHETTE for the all-time franchise lead.

8-13-1904 – ED BARROW, formerly with the DETROIT TIGERS, assumed the position of General Manager of the MONTREAL ROYALS of the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE.

8-13-1969 – IF BOB BAILOR was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the BALTIMORE ORIOLES.

8-13-1978 – On a groundout by OTTO VELEZ, BOB BAILOR charged home from third base to score the winning run in the tenth inning as their TORONTO BLUE JAYS defeated the KANSAS CITY ROYALS, 3-2, for their 100TH win in franchise history.

8-13-1979 – DENNIS LAMP gave up the 3000TH hit to LOU BROCK in his 10324TH at-bat in game number 2629.

8-14-1968 – JIM FANNING was named as General Manager of the MONTREAL EXPOS, and became an integral part of their organization for many years after.

8-14-1981 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS edged the MILWAUKEE BREWERS 5-4 to win in their first home game since the baseball strike, with JERRY GARVIN the winning pitcher, and ROY LEE JACKSON picking up the save.

8-14-1991 – SAN DIEGO PADRES 1B FRED McGRIFF became the fourth hitter in NATIONAL LEAGUE history, and the 13TH overall, to hit grand slams in consecutive games on 8-13 off MARK PORTUGAL and on 8-14 off JIM DESHAIES of the HOUSTON ASTROS.

8-14-1997 – IF GREG COLBRUNN is traded to the ATLANTA BRAVES from the MINNESOTA TWINS in exchange for OF MARC LEWIS.

8-14-1999 – SS GEOFF BLUM hit a pair of solo home runs versus the COLORADO ROCKIES at COORS FIELD, becoming only the third MONTREAL EXPOS shortstop in club history to ever do so, with BRET BARBERIE being the first to accomplish this feat, doing so as a rookie from both sides of the plate on 8-2-1991, while MARK GRUDZIELANEK connected in his first two at-bats on 5-13-1998 at 3-COM PARK versus the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS. Blum was one of four batters in that game to hit a pair of home runs, tying a MLB record for just the third time, with the others being DANTE BICHETTE, TODD HELTON and EDGAR CLEMENTE.

8-15-1872 – The MAPLE LEAF CLUB of Guelph, Ontario, the Canadian Champions, play the MUTUAL CLUB of NEW YORK on the UNION GROUNDS, with the Canadian group having begun their American tour in Baltimore on the 12TH, losing 25-5. On the 14TH they lost to the ATHLETICS of PHILADELPHIA, 35-8, then today in a much closer game they lost to the MUTUAL CLUB of NEW YORK, 9-4.

8-15-1978 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS sent the 'Beeg Mon', RICO CARTY to the OAKLAND ATHLETICS for DH WILLIE HORTON and RHP PHIL HUFFMAN. Carty played two seasons for Toronto, belting 32 homers and collecting 123 RBI.

8-15-1982 – The MONTREAL EXPOS and PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES drew 211600 fans to a 5-game, 4-date series at OLYMPIC STADIUM, between 12-15 August 1982. That total was the third highest in MLB history for a 4-date series and the highest since 1963 when the LOS ANGELES DODGERS drew 219948 for a 4-date series with the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.

8-15-1987 – C JOE SIDDALL was signed by the MONTREAL EXPOS as a non-drafted free agent.

8-15-1991 – RHEAL CORMIER, after being called up from Triple-AAA LOUISVILLE REDBIRDS to the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, won his MLB debut versus the NEW YORK METS, becoming first Cardinals starter to win his debut since 4-24-1985 and the first French-Canadian-born pitcher in the NATIONAL LEAGUE to accomplish this feat since CLAUDE RAYMOND on 4-29-1971.

8-15-1997 – JIM FLEMING was appointed the Director of Scouting for the MONTREAL EXPOS.

8-15-1999 – MARTESSE ROBINSON was promoted to the position of Coordinator, Scouting for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS.

8-15-2001 – RHP IAN HARVEY was signed as a minor league free agent by the SAN DIEGO PADRES.

8-16-1976 – PAT GILLICK left the NEW YORK YANKEES to become the TORONTO BLUE JAYS Vice-President of Player Personnel. In 1983 he was voted Canada's Baseball Man of the Year.

8-16-1980 – During the season BOB BAILOR played seven positions for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, appearing in RF, CF, LF, 3B, SS, 2B and even pitching, taking the mound on 8-4 vs the CLEVELAND INDIANS, 8-8 and 8-16 versus the KANSAS CITY ROYALS, and in 2.1 innings, gave up four hits, two earned runs while walking only one.

8-16-1984 – PETE ROSE is traded to the CINCINNATI REDS by the MONTREAL EXPOS in exchange for IF TOM LAWLESS.

8-16-1987 – OF TIM RAINES became only the third member of the MONTREAL EXPOS, in their franchise history since 1969, to hit for the cycle, accomplishing this feat against the PITTSBURGH PIRATES at OLYMPIC STADIUM.

8-16-1989 – LARRY WALKER, recalled from the Triple-AAA INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS, started in right field at OLYMPIC STADIUM, had his first MLB hit and walked three times for the MONTREAL EXPOS versus the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.

8-16-2000 – OF ORLANDO MERCED signed a minor league contract with the HOUSTON ASTROS.

8-17-1984 – PETE ROSE makes his debut as the player/manager for the CINCINNATI REDS, leading his team to a 6-4 win over the CHICAGO CUBS, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

8-17-1986 – ERNIE WHITT's dramatic eleventh inning home run gave the TORONTO BLUE JAYS an 8-7 win over the TEXAS RANGERS, completing a 3-game sweep, being the club's first series sweep at home that season.

8-17-1999 – STEVE KLINE made history at the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS when he became the 14TH pitcher in MLB history to strikeout the first four batters in one inning and the 37th hurler to strikeout four in one-inning, the sixth in 1999.

8-17-2001 – JEFF FRYE hit for the cycle at SKYDOME going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in, having tripled in the second inning, then doubled in the fifth inning. In the sixth he hit a two-run home run and in the seventh inning hit an RBI single to complete the cycle, becoming only the second ninth-hitting batter to accomplish this feat since 1978 when C CHARLIE MOORE did so while with the MILWAUKEE BREWERS versus the CALIFORNIA ANGELS on 10-08-1980.

8-18-1976 – FRANK ROBINSON appeared in his final MLB contest for the CLEVELAND INDIANS versus the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, pinch-hitting in the eighth inning, singling in a run.

8-18-1977 – OF DOUG FROBEL was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

8-18-1979 – MARK BOMBACK of the VANCOUVER CANADIANS of the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE, became the first Triple-A pitcher in 13 years to win 20 games in a season as he defeated the OGDEN A's, 7-2, ending the season with a 22-7 record.

8-18-1981 – BARRY BONNELL had 2 singles totaling 3 RBI to pace the TORONTO BLUE JAYS to a 5-3 decision over the KANSAS CITY ROYALS, with DAMASO GARCIA adding a pair of singles, banging in 2 runs to help the team.

8-18-1987 – LHP DENIS BOUCHER was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the TORONTO BLUE JAYS.

8-18-1992 – RHP GIL HEREDIA was claimed on waivers by the MONTREAL EXPOS from the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS.

8-19-1997 – In a seldom seen play in the majors, CHICAGO WHITE SOX 3B ROBIN VENTURA handed the baseball to 2B RAY DURHAM who successfully caught TORONTO BLUE JAYS OF JOSE CRUZ JR off second base through use of the hidden ball trick.

8-19-1998 – FELIPE ALOU recorded his 520TH and 521ST wins on 8-18 and 8-19 at the ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS to tie and then pass BOB "BUCK" RODGERS as the winningest manager in MONTREAL EXPOS franchise history.

8-19-1981 – LLOYD MOSEBY had 3 singles and drove in 6 runs to spark the TORONTO BLUE JAYS to a 9-4 victory over the KANSAS CITY ROYALS. ALVIS WOODS slapped out 3 singles to knock in the other 3 runs.

8-21-1981 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS battled back from a 4-0 deficit to down the CHICAGO WHITE SOX 5-4 for their third win in a row, as LLOYD MOSEBY blasted a 2-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

8-21-1997 – RHP MICHAEL JOHNSON won his first MLB start in a game versus the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, becoming the 14TH Canadian-born player, the first native of Alberta and just the second player born further west of Ontario to appear in a game for the MONTREAL EXPOS. He allowed one unearned run on just two hits in 6 innings, leaving the game with a 2-1 lead as his EXPOS held on for a 3-2 victory, and also collected his first hit in MLB in the 5th inning and later scored his first run.

8-21-2001 – In what turns out to be an organized baseball first, TIM RAINES and TIM RAINES JR face each other in a doubleheader between the OTTAWA LYNX and ROCHESTER RED WINGS of the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, with both going 1-for-3 in the opener, while son tops dad in the nightcap, going 1-for-4.

8-22-1928 – In the second no-hitter he tossed in one year, JOHN PRUDHOMME threw the seventh no-hitter in TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS franchise history, 5-0, in 7-innings, over the JERSEY CITY SKEETERS at Toronto.

8-22-1973 – IF ALFREDO GRIFFIN signed with the CLEVELAND INDIANS as a non-drafted free agent at the age of 16.

8-22-1975 – 3B DAVE McKAY made his MLB debut with the MINNESOTA TWINS, hitting a third-inning home run in his first at-bat in the big leagues, off VERN RUHLE of the DETROIT TIGERS, in an 8-4 win, becoming the 43RD player to do so and the 20TH in the AL. He then proceeded to hit safely in his first five games and in 21 of his first 22 games overall and was only the second Canadian-born player to play with the Twins, the other being GEORGES MARANDA in 1962.

Since 1910, this was only the fifth time in the 20TH century, and the first since 1941, where active players or coaches have appeared as umpires in a MLB game.

8-27-1979 – It was not to be for DETROIT TIGERS LHP JOHN HILLER needed only five more
appearances to become all-time Tigers pitching leader when shoulder problems sidelined him for balance of campaign, later forcing him to retire, finishing at 4-7 with 5.22 ERA in 79 innings pitched. Lifetime he was 86-76, 2.84 ERA, 1036 strikeouts, 125 saves over 545 games.

8-27-1986 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS swept the CLEVELAND INDIANS 3-2 and 6-3 in a doubleheader. TOM HENKE picked up saves in both games, his 31ST and 32ND as a TORONTO BLUE JAYS reliever, a new team mark for career saves.

8-31-1993 – In the bottom of the first inning, the COLORADO ROCKIES reversed the third and fourth hitters in their lineup, with ANDRES GALARRAGA batting instead of DANTE BICHETTE, grounding out to end the inning, who then led off the second with an infield single, eventually scoring their first run. The MONTREAL EXPOS did not protest and eventually won this contest, 14-3.

8-31-1997 – LARRY WALKER blasted a 493-foot home run into the third deck, the longest shot ever hit by a COLORADO ROCKIES hitter at COORS FIELD.
