PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES down the MONTREAL EXPOS, 2-1, in 10 innings and
escape the cellar. With the game's conclusion, many of the crowd of
31822 swarmed onto the field, destroying the playing surface and parts
of the ballpark, forcing the cancellation of a post-game ceremony.

10-01-1998 – PAUL QUANTRILL set the record for most appearances
by a
Canadian-born pitcher with 82, which also marked the second highest
single season total in TORONTO BLUE JAYS history, breaking his own mark
of 77 set in 1997, surpassing the 65 appearances by JOHN HILLER for the
DETROIT TIGERS in 1973. On the season he was 3-4 with a 2.59 ERA,
notched 59 Ks and 7 save.
10-01-1999 – ERIC GAGNE won his
first MLB game in a 5-1 victory at the
HOUSTON ASTROS in which he allowed no runs on five hits in 6.0 innings,
striking out 8. In his short time in the big leagues he tossed 30
innings over 5 games with a 1-1 won-loss mark, had a 2.10 ERA with 30
Ks and was later named as the LOS ANGELES DODGERS Minor League Pitcher
of the Year for 1999 and was honored by the TEXAS LEAGUE as their
Pitcher of the Year.
10-01-1999 – VLADIMIR GUERRERO hit his 39TH home run to break
his own
club record in a 7-4 win at the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, also setting a
new franchise record with 124 RBI, surpassing mark of 123 set by TIM

200 hits on the season, three more than VLADIMIR GUERRERO, however, the

10-23-1945 – JACKIE ROBINSON, former UCLA football and track star, who
had played shortstop for the KANSAS CITY MONARCHS in the NEGRO NATIONAL
LEAGUE, signed a contract to play for the MONTREAL ROYALS of the
INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, the BROOKLYN DODGERS top farm club, breaking the
color barrier which had existed since 1884.
10-23-1970 – SHERRY ROBERTSON died at the age of 51 in Houghton,
South
Dakota. He was born in Montreal on 1 January 1919 and had played as an
infielder / outfielder with the WASHINGTON SENATORS from 1940-1951, and
PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS in 1952.
10-23-1980 – 3B ROY HOWELL filed for free agency having been
with the
TORONTO BLUE JAYS over four seasons, compiling a .272 batting average,
43 homers and 234 RBI during that period.
10-23-1993 – Down a run in the ninth inning, with two men on
base, JOE
CARTER hits a 2-2 offering from MITCH WILLIAMS over the left field wall
to win the World Series for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, being only the
second time that a home run ended a World Series. The TORONTO BLUE JAYS
are the first repeat champions since the 1977-1978 NEW YORK YANKEES and
PAUL MOLITOR is named as the World Series MVP.
10-23-1996 – The TORONTO BLUE JAYS top starter PAT HENTGEN was
named
the winner of the CY YOUNG Award, after going 20-10 with a 3.22 ERA,
with three shutouts in 265.2 innings pitched.
10-23-2001 – KARL KUEHL was
named Special Advisor to Baseball
Operations for the CLEVELAND INDIANS.
10-24-1979 – BOBBY MATTICK hired his first new coach, DENIS MENKE, who
had managed the TORONTO BLUE JAYS Class-A team, the DUNEDIN BLUE JAYS
of the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE, over the previous two campaigns.
10-24-1992 – DAVE WINFIELD, having a quiet World Series at the
plate,
hits a 2-run double to put the TORONTO BLUE JAYS ahead in Game 6. The
final out is made by JOE CARTER on OTIS NIXON'sw failed bunt attempt.
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS win the World Series 4 games to 2, with PAT
BORDERS named as the Most Valuable Player in the 1992 World Series.

named as the 11th General Manager of the
CHICAGO WHITE SOX, replacing RON SCHUELER who had been the longest
tenured GM in the AMERICAN LEAGUE, with over ten years in this position.
10-25-1968 – JOE LISCIO becomes the first MONTREAL EXPOS Trainer.
10-25-1973 – RHP FERGUSON JENKINS was traded by the CHICAGO CUBS
to the
TEXAS RANGERS for 3B BILL MADLOCK and IF VIC HARRIS.
10-25-1985 – JIMY WILLIAMS became the fourth manager in TORONTO
BLUE
JAYS history, replacing the departed BOBBY COX, after being the team's
3B coach over the previous six seasons.

10-25-2001 – JACKIE BROWN was
named as the Pitching Coach and TOM FOLEY

10-26-1973 – RHP FERGUSON JENKINS is acquired by the TEXAS
RANGERS from

going on to post a 25-12 mark and a 2.83 ERA. with 29 complete games in
1974.
