5-02-2000 – OF CHAD MOTTOLA, of the SYRACUSE SKYCHIEFS, tied a
franchise record with five hits, on two singles, two doubles and a

5-03-1961 – OF ELLIS BURTON, of
the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS, in the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, hit two home runs
in one inning, one batting right-handed with the bases full and one
batting left-handed with one man on base.
5-03-1973 – RAYMOND PERRY, who
led a minor league in home runs for seven consecutive seasons,
1948-1954, died in Fremont, California, at age 52.

rookie RHP BARRY CORT earned his first MLB start, a complete game 6-2

tossed his first career two-hitter to defeat the ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS,

5-04-1985 – BILL KUNKEL, who
pitched with the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS, the KANSAS CITY ATHLETICS and the
NEW YORK YANKEES before becoming an AL umpire from 1968-1984, died at
the age of 48.

TERRY PUHL clubbed his second grand slam for the HOUSTON ASTROS.

rookie OF JUNIOR FELIX became the 53RD player in MLB history to hit a

3-2, in 10 innings. He is the 27TH AMERICAN LEAGUE player ever to homer
in his first MLB at-bat, and the 10TH to do so on the first pitch.
5-05-1883 – Canadian-born JAMES
EDWARD "TIP" O'NEILL made his MLB debut with the NEW YORK GOTHAMS of
the NATIONAL LEAGUE.
5-05-1970 – CLIFF JOHNSON, of
Raleigh-Durham in the CAROLINA LEAGUE, hit a grand slam and a double in
the 13-run third inning that carried his team to a 14-2 victory over
Salem.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS hit the first inside-the park home run at EXHIBITION
STADIUM in Toronto as OF GARY WOODS lost sight of the ball in a heavy

5-05-1978 – PETE ROSE hit a
single off MONTREAL EXPOS RHP STEVE ROGERS, playing before a home crowd
at RIVERFRONT STADIUM, reaching the 3000TH hit mark, in his 9690TH
at-bat, in game 2370.

into the first row of seats at COORS FIELD, however it rebounded so
rapidly off the seat back that it came back onto the field in such a
manner that 2B umpire RANDY MARSH thought it hit high off the outfield
wall, so the slugger was credited with just a double instead of what
should have been his 100TH career home run.
5-06-1937 – In INTERNATIONAL
LEAGUE play, the BALTIMORE ORIOLES were forced to use gloves borrowed
from members of the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS after much of their equipment
was stolen while they attended a pre-opening game banquet in Toronto.
5-06-1980 – ROY HOWELL crashed
a 2-run pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning to edge the CALIFORNIA
ANGELS, 3-2, as the visitors had the bases loaded in the eighth and
ninth innings but failed to score.
5-06-2000 – 3B ED SPRAGUE, of
the SAN DIEGO PADRES, needed a triple in the ninth inning to hit for
the cycle but settled for his ninth-career two-homer game with five of

recorded his 250TH major league win, in a NEW YORK YANKEES victory over

5-07-1949 – AL PORTO pitched
the twelfth no-hitter for the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS against the NEWARK
BEARS, 5-0, at Toronto.
5-07-1978 – RICK BOSETTI
smacked the second grand slam in TORONTO BLUE JAYS franchise history,
in the eighth inning, off ENRIQUE ROMO of the SEATTLE MARINERS in the
KINGDOME.
5-07-1985 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS mastered the OAKLAND ATHLETICS 10-1 with WILLIE UPSHAW, GEORGE

5-07-1995 – At COORS FIELD,
COLORADO ROCKIES OF LARRY WALKER hit his 100TH career home run off
HIDEO NOMO of the LOS ANGELES DODGERS.
5-07-1997 – The biggest inning
in MONTREAL EXPOS history was a 13-run bombardment against the SAN
FRANCISCO GIANTS at 3-COM PARK in San Francisco, in the sixth inning in
a 19-3 victory. The team, ahead 6-3, sent 17 batters to the plate who
pounded out 13 hits (eight singles, three doubles, two home runs and
one HBP) against three pitchers. The 44-pitch, 30-minute carnage
started with eight straight hits, including a two-run homer by MIKE
LANSING and a two-run single by CHRIS WIDGER. After starter JEFF JUDEN
struck out for the first out, Lansing hit his second homer of the
inning, a three-run shot, which was followed after the second out by a
three-run double by DOUG STRANGE. Five players (Lansing, MARK
GRUDZIELANEK, DAVID SEGUI, F.P. SANTANGELO and Strange) collected two
hits apiece while VLADIMIR GUERRERO had one hit and was hit by a pitch.
Five records were set or tied in the big inning. The 13 runs in a sixth
inning tied a MLB record; the total of batters, runs, hits and
consecutive hits were team highs and the two home runs by Lansing tied
a team mark for the fourth time.
5-07-2000 – Pitching for his
FLORIDA MARLINS, RHP RYAN DEMPSTER threw a 3-0 one-hitter against the
NEW YORK METS at PRO PLAYER PARK.
5-08-1980 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS downed the CALIFORNIA ANGELS 9-2 to sweep a 3-game series, as OTTO
VELEZ went 4-for-4 and scored 3 times, with the win putting the TORONTO

acquired 3B ROY HOWELL from the TEXAS RANGERS in exchange for pitcher
RHP STEVE HARGAN and SS JIM MASON. Howell hit safely in his first 15
games with the TORONTO BLUE JAYS.
5-09-1977 - When the two newest
AMERICAN LEAGUE teams meet for the first time, the TORONTO BLUE JAYS
defeat the SEATTLE MARINERS, 12-4.
5-09-1995 – RHP UGUETH URBINA
made his MLB debut with the MONTREAL EXPOS at the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.
5-10-1936 – In INTERNATIONAL
LEAGUE action, RAYMOND STARR of the SYRACUSE CHIEFS pitched a
doubleheader against the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS, shutting them out 9-0 and
2-0.
5-10-1971 – Pitching for his
CHICAGO CUBS, FERGUSON JENKINS blanked the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, 3-0,
in the first shutout at their new VETERANS STADIUM.
5-10-1976 – Toronto hired their
first employee, PAUL BEESTON, as Vice-President of Administration, then
later on 24 September 1984 he was appointed Executive Vice-President,
Business.
5-10-1981 – RHP CHARLIE LEA
tossed his first complete game shutout, a no-hitter, over the SAN
FRANCISCO GIANTS, allowing only 4 walks while striking out eight, a
career high, in the 4-0 decision, throwing 122 pitches. It was the
third no-hitter in MONTREAL EXPOS franchise history, as BILL STONEMAN
had the others on 17 April 1969 and 2 October 1972. Lea was named both
NL Player of the Week and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Player of the Week, and
became the first French-born player to ever pitch a MLB no-hitter and
has the shortest surname of any no-hit pitcher in history.
5-10-1991 – ROBERTO ALOMAR is
the only TORONTO BLUE JAYS player to ever hit home runs from both sides

5-12-1966 – FELIPE ALOU hit the
first two home runs for the ATLANTA BRAVES in the Opening Day game at

BOBBY DOERR hit for the cycle for the second time, at FENWAY PARK.
5-13-1967 – At FENWAY PARK, the
DETROIT TIGERS outslug the BOSTON RED SOX, 10-8, with the victory going
to Canadian-born RHP GEORGE KORINCE, however he will end his major
league career at 1-0, remaining the only undefeated Canadian-born
pitcher in MLB history.
5-13-1998 – CHRIS WIDGER and
MARK GRUDZIELANEK both homered in the same game for their MONTREAL
EXPOS versus the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS at 3COM PARK.
5-13-1984 – The TORONTO BLUE
JAYS play in the first tie game in their history at the CLEVELAND
INDIANS, when with one out in the top of the eighth inning, the rains
came and play could not resume with the score knotted at 4-4. The game
had to be completely replayed as part of a TWDH on 15 August 1984.
5-13-1984 – Relief pitcher JOEY
McLAUGHLIN was given his outright release by Toronto. In his stay with
the TORONTO BLUE JAYS he posted a 22-24 mark with 31 saves.
5-13-1985 – UNLUCKY 13 !!! – A
day on which the MONTREAL EXPOS should have stayed in bed, saw them
lose 5-3 at OLYMPIC STADIUM to CHICAGO CUBS, evening their record at
13-13. The Cubs had 13 hits and left 13 runners stranded. The game's
winning run was driven in by the Cub's LARRY BIITNER, whose number, 26,
is 2x13, and the losing pitcher was DAN WARTHEN, whose number, 39, is
3x13 !!!
5-13-1985 – TONY PEREZ became
the oldest player in MLB history to ever hit a grand slam.
5-13-1989 – KIRBY PUCKETT, of
the MINNESOTA TWINS, tied a MLB record hitting four doubles against the
TORONTO BLUE JAYS, becoming the 35TH player to ever accomplish this
feat, and the first since DAMASO GARCIA in 1986.
5-14-1968 – Montreal officially
becomes a member of the NATIONAL LEAGUE.
5-14-1971 - The WINNIPEG WHIPS,
in the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE, knocked out nine home runs in a game with

5-14-1977 - DENNIS DeBARR
worked two-thirds of an inning in relief for the TORONTO BLUE JAYS in
his MLB debut in a 13-3 loss to the MINNESOTA TWINS.

5-14-1986 – RHP JOSEPH BLASE
"JOE" SPARMA, who appeared with the MONTREAL EXPOS in 1970, died at the
age of just 44 in Columbus, Ohio. He was a star quarterback at OHIO
STATE, but left after three years due to differences with Coach WOODY
HAYES. (see 12-02-1969).
5-14-1993 – RHP WOODY WILLIAMS
made his MLB debut with the TORONTO BLUE JAYS at the NEW YORK YANKEES.
5-14-1997 – MATT STAIRS, of the
OAKLAND ATHLETICS, had his first MLB two-homer game against the
MILWAUKEE BREWERS.
5-14-2000 - The MONTREAL EXPOS
beat the CHICAGO CUBS 16-15 at the BIG 'O', marking just the second
time in franchise history that both clubs scored at least 15 runs
(other game took place in Chicago on 24 September 1985 in a 17-15 Expos
win). The 31-run contest featured a first-inning triple play, which was
the tenth in franchise history, and the first since 29 September 1993
against the FLORIDA MARLINS.
5-15-1971 – FERGUSON JENKINS
pitches and bats his CHICAGO CUBS to a 6-4 win over the SAN DIEGO
PADRES, hitting a two-run home run finishing his seventh game in eight
starts, as BILLY WILLIAMS connects on this 300TH career home run.
5-15-1973 – JEFF TORBORG caught
the third no-hitter of his MLB career.
5-15-1974 – While with the
CHICAGO WHITE SOX, RHP STAN BAHNSEN came close on two occasions to
pitching a no-hitter in major league action, having retired 23 batters
before BOBBY DARWIN, of the MINNESOTA TWINS, singled in a game on this
date, and was one out away from the record books when WALT WILLIAMS
singled for the CLVELAND INDIANS on 21 August 1973.
5-15-1977 – DH WILLIE HORTON
became the first TEXAS RANGERS hitter to club three home runs in one
game in a 7-3 victory over the KANSAS CITY ROYALS at ROYALS STADIUM.
5-15-1981 – CLEVELAND INDIANS
ace LEN BARKER tossed baseball's first perfect game in 13 years,
beating the TORONTO BLUE JAYS 3-0 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM before a typical
small home crowd, throwing just 103 pitches (74 strikes/29 balls
fanning 11.) It's the first perfecto since pitcher's mounds were
lowered and strike zones shrunk after the 1968 season.
5-15-1984 – RHP ROGER CLEMENS
made his MLB debut with the BOSTON RED SOX, receiving a no decision in
a 7-5 loss at the CLEVELAND INDIANS.

500) in right field, estimated at having traveled 535 feet, and which
was later commemorated by placing a gold seat in the spot where the
ball landed. Coincidentally, it was Stargell's 407TH home run, tying

SCANTLEBURY, who had strong seasons with the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS from
1959 through 1961, died from complications of Parkinson's Disease at
the age of 74 in Montclair, New Jersey. During his career he was also a
noted pinch-hitter, registering a .301 mark in 1954, .379 with the
SEATTLE RAINIERS in 1956, .325 in 1959 and .286 in his final 1961
season, at the age of 44.

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE and had just been called up to the SAN DIEGO
PADRES. He had been drafted by the TORONTO BLUE JAYS in the first
round, 11th overall of the 1981 free-agent draft in the secondary phase.

consecutive game streak ended at .391 when he did not play in a match

member of this exclusive group was 2B TIM RAINES, who debuted on

team in his Montreal careers, makes his 2001 debut, suffering a 5-2
