3-01-1986 – JIMY WILLIAMS, the BLUE JAYS new manager, led his club through its first full workout in DUNEDIN as their 10th Spring Training schedule got underway.3-02-1976 – The SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS were sold to ROBERT LURIE, who promised to keep the team in that city, ending Toronto's hopes of having them move to Canada.

3-03-1978 – In two trades, pitcher DENNIS DeBARR was sent to the CLEVELAND INDIANS for slugger RICO CARTY and pitcher TOM BRUNO was dealt to the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS in exchange for rookie outfielder RICK BOSETTI.

3-04-1986 – JIMY WILLIAMS announced that LLOYD MOSEBY would be the BLUE JAYS leadoff batter, moving DAMASO GARCIA to the 9th spot on the lineup card.

3-05-1977 – The BLUE JAYS had their first taste of competition as they played an intra-squad game, in which Canadian-born infielder DAVE McKAY had 2 hits and 4 RBI.

3-06-1983 – ELLIOT WAHLE resigned as the BLUE JAYS Director of Player Development to pursue an outside business career, having been with the franchise since its inception.

3-07-1977 – CBC-TV announced that it would carry 16 BLUE JAYS games during their first year, beginning with the team's season opener against the WHITE SOX.

3-08-1985 – DAVE STIEB signed an 11-year $25 million agreement, the richest contract in major league history, as he entered the 1985 campaign with a career record of 81-67.

3-09-1981 – 1B JOHN MAYBERRY was chosen as the BLUE JAYS first team captain by manager BOBBY MATTICK, after having set a franchise record by belting 30 home runs during the 1980 season.

3-10-1986 – Former BLUE JAYS batting instructor and coach BOBBY DOERR was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He excelled at 2B for the BOSTON RED SOX over 14 seasons.

3-11-1977 – The BLUE JAYS played in their first-ever Spring Training game beating the NEW YORK METS, 3-1, as SAM EWING doubled home the winning run, and DENNIS DeBARR won his first game as a major leaguer.

3-13-1981 – After three straight losses, the BLUE JAYS won their first game of the 5th training camp, downing the HOUSTON ASTROS, 8-6, as JOHN MAYBERRY's tater provided the winning margin.

3-14-1977 – In the first meeting between the MONTREAL EXPOS and the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, Toronto won 3-2, as RON FAIRLY drove in the winning run with a 2-run single, and SAM EWING hit their first-ever home run.

3-16-1982 – ERNIE WHITT and LLOYD MOSEBY hit back-to-back home runs to pace their BLUE JAYS to a 7-3 victory over the BOSTON RED SOX, with TONY FERNANDEZ adding 3 hits and 2 RBI.

3-16-1985 – RHP JUAN GUZMAN was signed as a non-drafted free-agent by the LOS ANGELES DODGERS.

3-17-1982 – BUCK MARTINEZ had 2 of their 6 hits as the BLUE JAYS downed the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, by a 3-1 score, as he blasted a solo homer in the 9th off their top reliever BRUCE SUTTER.

3-20-1976 – The AMERICAN LEAGUE voted 11-1 to offer a baseball franchise to the city of Toronto, with the BALTIMORE ORIOLES being the one team to vote in the negative.

3-21-1976 – The NATIONAL LEAGUE claimed that it was strongly considering an expansion which would include a franchise for the city of Toronto.

3-22-1976 – LEE McPHAIL, president of the AMERICAN LEAGUE, was in Toronto to inspect the new baseball facilities, after which he expressed his satisfaction with the alterations and changes at EXHIBITION STADIUM.

3-23-1976 – JOHN McHALE, president of the MONTREAL EXPOS, tried to convince those NATIONAL LEAGUE owners opposed to expansion, CINCINNATI and PHILADELPHIA, that the league should expand to Toronto.

3-24-1976 – NATIONAL LEAGUE owners urged the MLB Commissioner, BOWIE KUHN, to prevent Toronto from joining the AMERICAN LEAGUE as they were planning to add Toronto to the NATIONAL LEAGUE.

3-25-1976 – Two Toronto Groups prepared for the next day's meeting with AMERICAN LEAGUE officials concerning the purchase of an expansion franchise.

3-26-1976 – LABATT's BREWERY, R. HOWARD WEBSTER and the CANADIAN IMPERIAL BANK OF COMMERCE were granted the Toronto baseball franchise, as it was decided the team would play in the tough AMERICAN LEAGUE East Divison.

3-27-1980 – ALFREDO GRIFFIN banged in 3 runs with a 2-run home run and a single to help knock off the CINCINNATI REDS, 7-2, as RICO CARTY also belted a long home run in the contest.

3-28-1973 – RHP LARRY LANDRETH was signed as a free-agent by BILL SHUDLICH of the MONTREAL EXPOS, after having starred in the Stratford Minor Baseball Association in helping them to wins in five All-Ontario championships from 1966 to 1972, playing at the Tyke, PeeWee, Bantam, Midget levels, then he was a prominent member of the STRATFORD HILLERS first Ontario Inter-County Championship team that summer.

3-28-1978 – The BLUE JAYS dumped the PITTSBURGH PIRATES by a 12-3 score, behind the strong pitching of JIM CLANCY, as ROY HOWELL sparked the club with three singles and a big home run.

3-29-1977 – OF JOHN LOWENSTEIN was reacquired by the CLEVELAND INDIANS for IF HECTOR TORRES.

3-30-1984 – JIM CLANCY tossed a 3-hitter to defeat the MILWAUKEE BREWERS 2-0, in a pre-season match played in VANCOUVER to spur that city's quest for a MLB franchise.

3-31-1971 – The MONTREAL EXPOS traded OF DON HAHN to the NEW YORK METS in exchange for OF RON SWOBODA and IF RICH HACKER.

3-31-1980 – RUSTY STAUB was traded by the MONTREAL EXPOS to the TEXAS RANGERS for IF LaRUE WASHINGTON and IF CHRIS SMITH.

3-31-1981 – WILLIE UPSHAW rapped out 3 singles, walked twice and stole a base to lead his BLUE JAYS group to an 11-7 triumph over the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, as they scored 8 times in the 5th inning.

3-31-1982 – AL OLIVER was traded from the TEXAS RANGERS to the MONTREAL EXPOS in exchange for LARRY PARRISH and DAVE HOSTETLER, then went on to compile the finest offensive season of an illustrious 14-year career, winning the 1982 NATIONAL LEAGUE batting title with 317* total bases, 204* hits, a .331* average, 43* doubles, 22 home runs, compiling 109* RBI. * = League Leader.

3-31-1998 – MIKE LANSING, on Opening Day, had the first hit for the COLORADO ROCKIES against the expansion ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS. (see 4-9-1993).
