8-08-1903 – Twelve fans died and 232 were injured when a balcony collapsed at PHILADELPHIA PARK during a doubleheader with the BOSTON BRAVES, with the accident forcing the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES to play 16 games at COLUMBIA PARK, the home of the PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS.

8-09-1994 – OF CHUCK CARR hit the first ever game-ending home run in FLORIDA MARLINS franchise history, off VICENTE PALACIOS of the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth at JOE ROBBIE STADIUM.

8-09-1996 – The youngest player to ever appear in a game with the FLORIDA MARLINS was FELIX HEREDIA, being born on 6-18-1976, he was 20 years, 1 month and 22 days of age.

8-10-1883 – CHICAGO WHITE SOX star and manager ADRIAN "CAP" ANSON had threatened to cancel and exhibition game with TOLEDO BLUE STOCKINGS if C MOSES FLEETWOOD WALKER played. The injured catcher had not been slated to start but ended up in the game, which proceeded without incident.

8-10-1889 – MICKEY WELCH, playing for NEW YORK, became the first pinch hitter in MLB history, striking out.

8-10-1892 – CINCINNATI defeated ST. LOUIS 5-1 in the first ever Sunday game played.

8-10-1927 – The ST. LOUIS STARS played to the largest crowd that ever witnessed a regular season NEGRO NATIONAL LEAGUE game, as approximately 14000 fans jammed the stands in a 1-0 win over the CHICAGO GIANTS, with 1B WILLIE BOBO knocking in the only run on a homer over the car shed.

8-10-1939 – Throwing only 66 pitches, LOS ANGELES ANGELS RHP JULIO BONETTI pitched a perfect game against the OAKLAND OAKS.

8-10-1962 – COLUMBUS JETS LHP BOB VEALE set an INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE record striking out 22 over 9 innings at the BUFFALO BISONS, however, he failed to win the contest, having been removed for a pinch-hitter in the tenth inning, only to see his side came out on top by a 6-5 result.

8-11-1927 – CHARLES "CHUCK" KLEIN made his professional debut with the EVANSVILLE HUBS of the THREE-I LEAGUE.

8-11-1928 – CARL HUBBELL shut out the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES in a 4-0 win for his NEW YORK GIANTS, earning the first of his 253 major league wins en route to being elected to the baseball hall of fame.

8-11-1929 – BABE RUTH clubs his 500TH home run at LEAGUE PARK against the CLEVELAND INDIANS.

8-11-1940 – LHP STANLEY MUSIAL, of the DAYTONA BEACH ISLANDERS in the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE, playing in centerfield when not on the mound, landed on his left shoulder while making a shoestring catch, ending his pitching career. The injury proved to be a blessing in disguise as he was permanently made an outfielder in 1941.

8-13-1950 – At RED WING STADIUM, for 22 innings the ROCHESTER RED WINGS and the JERSEY CITY GIANTS pitchers matched pitches, then finally, 5 hours and 15 minutes later 1B DON RICHMOND smashed a run-scoring single for a 3-2 victory, ending one of the most remarkable pitching duels in minor league history. 8-13-1959 – The SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS and CHICAGO CUBS set the record for the longest nine inning game in MLB history, playing 3 hours and 50 minutes, winning the marathon at WRIGLEY FIELD by a 20-9 final, knocking out 19 hits with five home runs.

8-15-1958 – RUBEN GOMEZ of the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS blanked the LOS ANGELES DODGERS in the first game ever played on the West Coast by both of these former New York teams.

8-15-1962 – CLARENCE "CHOO CHOO" COLEMAN, in the sixth and JIM HICKMAN in the eighth become the first members of the NEW YORK METS in franchise history to hit pinch-hit home runs in the same game at the POLO GROUNDS, against the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, tying the record for pinch hit home runs by one club in one game.

8-15-1993 – NOLAN RYAN records his 324TH and final win at CLEVELAND STADIUM.

8-15-2000 – TEXAS RANGERS OF GABE KAPLER holds the franchise single-season batting streak record of 28 consecutive games from 6-17 through 8-15-2000.

8-15-2001 – SAN DIEGO PADRES RHP TREVOR HOFFMAN recorded his 300TH save against the NEW YORK METS in a 2-1 result, becoming the first relief pitcher in MLB history to post 5 seasons of 40 saves and the first ever to record 4 in succession.

8-15-2001 – C JORGE POSADA set a rather dubious mark in striking out from both sides of the plate in the same inning in a NEW YORK YANKEES 10-3 win over the TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS.

8-15-1989 – In his second start upon returning from cancer treatment, LHP DAVE DRAVECKY broke his pitching arm while throwing to TIM RAINES in Montreal in the sixth inning of a 3-2 victory for his SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS over the MONTREAL EXPOS. The bone healed but broke again during an on-field celebration when his team wins the pennant and he will never pitch again in the majors, later losing his arm to amputation.

8-16-1870 – With a lifetime mark of 112-68 and 2.73 ERA, RHP FRED GOLDSMITH died on 3-28-1939 with newspaper clippings crediting him with the invention of the curveball, which he made public in a demonstration of the pitch on this date.

8-16-1920 – At the POLO GROUNDS, CLEVELAND INDIANS SS RAY CHAPMAN is beaned by NEW YORK YANKEES pitcher CARL MAYS, being struck near the left temple, dropping him to the ground. He struggled to his feet, took one step toward first base and collapsed, then died the next morning on 8-17. ( see 8-17-1920 )

8-16-1948 – GEORGE HERMAN "BABE" RUTH dies in New York of throat cancer at the age of 53.

8-16-1968 – C BILL FREEHAN was hit by pitches 3 times in one game for his DETROIT TIGERS.

8-16-1981 – CAL RIPKEN singled off DENNIS LAMP of the CHICAGO WHITE SOX for his first MLB hit, in a 8-7 loss for his BALTIMORE ORIOLES in 10 innings.

8-16-1983 – Hall of Fame outfielder EARL AVERILL, known as the "Earl of Snohomish", died at the age of 81 in Everett, Washington.

8-17-1920 – Former MLB shortstop RAY CHAPMAN dies at the age of 29 in New York, after being beaned by CARL MAYS. ( see 8-16-1920 )

8-17-1933 – The "Earl of Snohomish", EARL AVERILL, was the first CLEVELAND INDIANS batter to hit for the cycle at their new CLEVELAND STADIUM against the PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS.

8-17-1957 – LHP STEVE DALKOWSKI, of the KINGSPORT ORIOLES in the APPALACHIAN LEAGUE, walked 21, with six wild pitches in a 9-7 loss to the WYTHEVILLE CARDINALS.

8-17-1957 – PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES CF RICHIE ASHBURN, known for his ability to foul off pitches, hit a woman spectator twice in the same at-bat. The first one broke her nose, while the second was while she was being removed on a stretcher. Ironically, she was ALICE ROTH the wife of EARL ROTH, sports editor of the PHILADELPHIA BULLETIN.

8-17-1963 – On "Luke Easter Night", the great slugger, now with the ROCHESTER RED WINGS, finally came clean about his actual age when he was offered $10 for every year of his age by club President MORRIE SILVER, and the $520 was enough to get him to state, "My baseball age is 42," Easter said smiling, "but my real age is 52." He retired after just 10 games into the 1964 season staying on as a coach.

8-17-1967 – JIM WEAVER of the CALIFORNIA ANGELS gives up the first major league home run hit by REGGIE JACKSON but holds on to defeat the KANSAS CITY ATHLETICS, 4-3.

8-17-1969 – FRANK SHELLENBACK, player, manager, coach and scout in organized baseball for over 50 seasons, died at Newton, Massachusetts at the age of 70. He was a 315 game winner in the minors and was a good hitter, with 63 home runs and a .271 average.

8-17-1971 – The HOUSTON ASTROS top the PITTSBURGH PIRATES, 6-5, as BILL MAZEROSKI records the 2000TH career hit of his most distinguished career.

8-17-1986 – STEVE CARLTON won his first AMERICAN LEAGUE game, and the 320TH of his career, as his CHICAGO WHITE SOX downed the MILWAUKEE BREWERS, 7-4.

8-17-1990 – CHICAGO WHITE SOX C CARLTON FISK sets the MLB record for home runs by a catcher, cracking No. 328 off CHARLIE HOUGH at the TEXAS RANGERS, surpassing JOHNNY BENCH who had amassed 327.

8-18-1956 – The CINCINNATTI REDS set a team record in blasting eight home runs in one game, victimizing the MILWAUKEE BRAVES. On the season they clout 221 homers, tying the NATIONAL LEAGUE record.

8-18-1967 – The promising career of BOSTON RED SOX OF TONY CONIGLIARO was tragically shortened when he was hit in the face by a pitch at FENWAY PARK.

8-18-1980 – 3B GEORGE BRETT holds the KANSAS CITY ROYALS franchise record for the top consecutive-game hitting streak, with 30, set between 7-18 and 8-18-1980.

8-18-1995 – The COLORADO ROCKIES suffered their largest margin of defeat in franchise history, in a 26-7 pounding at the hands of the CHICAGO CUBS at COORS FIELD.

8-18-1902 – In the first authenticated unassisted triple play in organized baseball, 1B HARRY O'HAGEN of the ROCHESTER RED WINGS executed an unassisted triple play at the JERSEY CITY GIANTS, of the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE.

8-19-1958 – In addition to collecting 14 other hits, each member of the DOUGLAS COPPER KINGS contributed one home run in a 22-8 thumping of Chihuahua in an ARIZONA-MEXICAN LEAGUE game, a feat never accomplished before or since in professional baseball.

8-20-1938 – VIRGIL TRUCKS fanned 15 batters in a game for Andalusia at Troy in ALABAMA-FLORIDA LEAGUE play, to increase his strikeout total to 413 over 267 innings on the season, a record for pitchers from the 60'6" distance, finishing the year with 418 Ks in 272 IP.

8-20-1948 – The AMERICAN LEAGUE attendance record for a night game was 78382 at CLEVELAND STADIUM in a game between the visiting CHICAGO WHITE SOX and CLEVELAND INDIANS.

8-20-1979 – The KANSAS CITY ROYALS send IF JERRY TERRELL in to pitch during a real blowout against the NEW YORK YANKEES, and in his first professional inning on the mound, he proceeds to retire the side in order on only three pitches.

8-20-1999 – IF LUIS CASTILLO holds the FLORIDA MARLINS record with 9 at-bats in a nine-inning game against the HOUSTON ASTROS at PRO PLAYER PARK.

8-19-1954 – 21-year-old HERB SCORE set an all-time AMERICAN ASSOCIATION strikeout record by boosting his season total to 269, eclipsing the previous mark of 264 set in 1906.

8-19-1968 – RED WING STADIUM, the home of the ROCHESTER RED WINGS, was renamed SILVER STADIUM in honor of MORRIE SILVER, whose idea for a community stock drive in the late 1950s helped keep professional baseball in the city. "I just couldn't imagine youngsters growing up in the years to come not being able to see professional baseball in Rochester," he told the assembled crowd that evening.

8-19-1975 – LYNN McGLOTHEN recorded 3 strikeouts on 9 pitches in one inning.

8-20-1945 – TOMMY BROWN, of the BROOKLYN DODGERS, became the youngest player in major league history to hit a home run, at the age of 17 years, 8 months, and 14 days, connecting off PREACHER ROE, of the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

8-21-1945 – The SYRACUSE CHIEFS played in their eighth consecutive doubleheader in eight days, winning only 5 of the 16 contests.

8-21-1986 – SPIKE OWEN scored 6 runs in one game for the BOSTON RED SOX.

8-22-1965 – One of the most significant brawls in MLB history came at CANDLESTICK PARK when SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS RHP JUAN MARICHAL, reacting to taunts from LOS ANGELES DODGERS C JOHN ROSEBORO, hit him twice on the head with his bat. Roseboro, bloodied and severely injured, was taken to the clubhouse and Marichal was thrown out of the game. A lawsuit brought by Roseboro was later settled out of court.

8-22-1989 – NOLAN RYAN struck out RICKEY HENDERSON to become the first pitcher in MLB history to record 5000 career strikeouts

8-22-1993 – TEXAS RANGERS OF BUTCH DAVIS circled the bases on an inside-the-park home run, off ARTHUR RHODES at ORIOLE PARK at CAMDEN YARDS, on the first occasion this feat took place in the new home of the O's, and the first by a visiting player since 1960.

8-23-1936 – 17-year-old BOB FELLER made his starting debut with the CLEVELAND INDIANS by striking out 15 ST. LOUIS BROWNS batters in a 4-1 victory at LEAGUE PARK, which was one K less than the AMERICAN LEAGUE record to that date.

8-23-1953 – The TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS snapped the ten-game winning streak of the ROCHESTER RED WINGS with a 6-2 victory. After splitting the next two games, what followed drew the attention of the entire baseball world. (Go to 9-12-1953)

8-23-1990 – Colorado's Baseball Advisory Committee designates the Colorado Baseball Partnership to spearhead the formation of an ownership group.

8-23-1989 – The longest game in LOS ANGELES DODGERS and MONTREAL EXPOS franchise history ended in a 1-0 triumph over 22 innings at OLYMPIC STADIUM for the Dodgers.

8-24-1945 – CLEVELAND INDIANS ace BOB FELLER returns from wartime service in the United States Navy, striking out 12, yielding only four hits, in a 4-2 win over HAL NEWHOUSER of the DETROIT TIGERS, before a home crowd of 46477 home fans.

8-24-1989 – The Commissioner of MLB, ANGELO BARTLETT GIAMATTI, banned PETE ROSE from the game for gambling.

8-25-1894 – CHICAGO CUBS catcher WILLIAM "POP" SCHRIVER succeeded in catching a baseball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument. This feat, though well documented, attracted almost no newspaper attention. Then, fourteen years later, another catcher, GABBY STREET, of the WASHINGTON SENATORS did the exact same thing, and became famous for doing so.

8-25-1922 – The CHICAGO CUBS have been involved in two of the highest scoring games in MLB history, the first being a 26-23 defeat of the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES at CUBS PARK.(see 5-17-1979)

8-29-1929 – The NEW YORK GIANTS installed the first public address system in MLB history, with umpire CHARLES RIGLER wearing a small microphone attached to his mask to announce ball and strike calls.

8-25-1937 – CLEVELAND INDIANS RHP BOB FELLER strikes out 16 BOSTON RED SOX, one less than the AMERICAN LEAGUE record, in an 8-1 victory.

8-25-1949 – The slugging first baseman LEO "MUSCLE" SHOALS of the REIDSVILLE LUCKIES in the CAROLINA LEAGUE, hit three home runs against the BURLINGTON BEES giving him 50 for the season, finishing up the campaign with 55 in total.

8-25-1957 – BOB "HURRICANE" HAZLE, the MILWAUKEE BRAVES rookie phenom, hit a single and two three-run home runs in a 7-3 win over the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, raising his batting average to .526, finishing at .403 in 41 games and helping his team through the playoffs and to the world championship.

8-25-1978 – The second umpire's strike lasted just one day, owing to a court injunction against the Major League Umpires Association.

8-25-1985 – DWIGHT "DOC" GOODEN became the youngest 20-game winner in MLB history.

8-25-1983 – ROBIN YOUNT achieves his 1500TH career hit, on a double, in the fifth inning off TOMMY JOHN of the CALIFORNIA ANGELS.

8-26-1956 – KEN GUETTLER, of the SHREVEPORT SPORTS, walloped his 60TH home run in a game against the FORT WORTH CATS of the TEXAS LEAGUE, becoming only the ninth hitter in organized baseball history to reach the 60 homer mark.

8-26-1962 – The first no-hitter in MINNESOTA TWINS franchise history was thrown by JACK KRALICK against the KANSAS CITY ATHLETICS, a 1-0 victory at METROPOLITAN STADIUM.

8-27-1912 – In what is believed to be one of the shortest games in organized baseball history, the HARRISBURG SENATORS defeated the YORK WHITE ROSES in 48 minutes in TRI-STATE LEAGUE play.

8-27-1920 – Due to a mistake in the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE schedule that was not discovered until it was too late to correct, the TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS played a doubleheader at HANLAN'S POINT STADIUM with two different teams, winning over the JERSEY CITY SKEETERS, 9-4, then losing to the SYRACUSE STARS, 6-4 in the second contest.

8-27-1961 – ROCKY COLAVITO hit four home runs in a doubleheader for the DETROIT TIGERS at the WASHINGTON SENATORS.

8-27-1974 – OF BENNY AYALA becomes the first member of the NEW YORK METS to hit a home run in his first at-bat in the major leagues.

8-27-1977 – In another of the strange events in MLB history, on consecutive pitches by KEN CLAY of the NEW YORK YANKEES, 3B TOBY HARRAH and 2B BUMP WILLS hit inside-the-park home runs for their TEXAS RANGERS at YANKEE STADIUM.

8-27-1982 – RICKEY HENDERSON broke the stolen base record of 118 held by LOU BROCK.

8-28-1920 – The TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS and BALTIMORE ORIOLES stood in a virtual tie for first place in the pennant chase, with Toronto winning 20 of its last 22 games, while Baltimore copped the flag in winning their last 25 contests, edging Toronto by 1.5 games. Baltimore won 109 games, losing 44, and Toronto accumulated 108 wins while dropping 46.

8-28-1966 – NOLAN RYAN ended his rookie season with Greenville of the WESTERN CAROLINAS LEAGUE, posting a 17-2 record while amassing 272 strikeouts.

8-28-1999 – TEXAS RANGERS catchers were charged with the fewest passed balls in their franchise history as GREGG ZAUN had one , and IVAN RODRIGUEZ was not charged until this game at the TORONTO BLUE JAYS, marking the fewest in the majors by one club since the SAN DIEGO PADRES permitted two in 1992.

8-29-1968 – PRESTON GOMEZ is named the first manager of the SAN DIEGO PADRES.

8-29-1972 – At YANKEE STADIUM in the Bronx, OF BOBBY MURCER became the first batter to ever hit for the cycle against the TEXAS RANGERS.

8-29-1977 – ST. LOUIS CARDINALS OF LOU BROCK breaks the career stolen base mark held by TY COBB, with number 893 coming against the SAN DIEGO PADRES at BUSCH MEMORIAL STADIUM.

8-29-1985 – 3B LARRY PARRISH hits three homers as his TEXAS RANGERS defeat the NEW YORK YANKEES, 7-5, at ARLINGTON STADIUM, in the fourth time in his career he accomplished this feat, becoming only the fifth player in MLB history to do so in both leagues.

8-29-1992 – EDDIE MURRAY belted a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game.

8-29-1992 – CHARLIE LIEBRANDT records his 1000TH career strikeout for his ATLANTA BRAVES against the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, but upon rolling the souvenir ball toward his dugout neglects to call "time" with RICKY JORDAN advancing to second on the miscue.

8-29-2002 – MARK BELLHORN became the first NATIONAL LEAGUE batter to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same inning, leading his CHICAGO CUBS to a 13-10 win over the MILWAUKEE BREWERS at MILLER PARK.

8-31-1959 – SANDY KOUFAX recorded 18 strikeouts in a 9-inning game for his LOS ANGELES DODGERS, breaking the previous NATIONAL LEAGUE mark of 17 set by DIZZY DEAN, tying the MLB record of BOB FELLER, in a game against the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS before a crowd of 82974 at the LOS ANGELES COLISEUM.

8-31-1961 – PETE ROSE, of the TAMPA TARPINS of the FLORIDA STATE LEAGUE, established a now long-standing league record with 30 triples for the season.

8-31-1968 – Minor league baseball legend, 1B JUDSON "JAY" KIRKE, one of the greatest hitters in minor league baseball history, died in New Orleans at the age of 80. In his 20 year career he made 3165 hits for a batting average of .316, hitting .301 in the majors, too. In 1921 he amassed 282 hits for Louisville and won the batting crown with a .386 average.
