10-08-1871 – In Chicago, a small blaze, whipped by high winds, became a towering
inferno, later to become known as the great Chicago fire. The first

10-09-1969 – At the age of just 41, former MLB 3B DONALD ALBERT HOAK died of a heart attack in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, found slumped over the wheel of his automobile while chasing his brother-in-law's stolen car. Several hours earlier the PITTSBURGH PIRATES announced that DANNY MURTAUGH, who managed the team previously, had been re-hired, a position the former infielder had been considered one of the leading contenders for.
10-09-1972 – Hall of Fame shortstop DAVE "BEAUTY" BANCROFT died at the age of 81 in Superior, Wisconsin.
10-09-1976 – PITTSBURGH PIRATES RHP BOB MOOSE suffered fatal injuries in an automobile accident at Martins Ferry, Ohio, on his 29TH birthday.

10-13-1975 – CHARLES AUGUST "SWEDE" RISBERG died on his birthday at the age of 81 in Red Bluff, California. Named as one of the "Eight Men Out", he was considered to be one of the roughest and toughest players of his day.
10-13-1983 – DAVEY JOHNSON, who managed the Class-AAA TIDEWATER TIDES to the 1983 Triple-A World Series, was named as the new Manager for the NEW YORK METS.
10-14-1969 – TOMMIE AGEE leads his NEW YORK METS to a 5-0 win over the BALTIMORE ORIOLES with a leadoff home run and two fantastic inning-ending outfield catches, saving a possible five runs.
10-14-1976 – 1B CHRIS CHAMBLISS hit one of the most dramatic home runs in NEW YORK YANKEES history, a solo shot on the first pitch from MARK LITTELL of the KANSAS CITY ROYALS in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving his BRONX BOMBERS a 7-6 victory in the fifth and deciding game of the AMERICAN LEAGUE Championship Series and their 30th pennant.
10-15-1923 – The NEW YORK YANKEES defeated the NEW YORK GIANTS, after World Series losses in 1921 and 1922 to their crosstown rivals, for the first of their 26 World Championships.
10-15-1964 – TIM McCARVER became the last player to steal home in a World Series game.
10-15-1985 – Former WASHINGTON SENATORS 3B OSWALD LOUIS "OSSIE" BLUEGE died at the age of 85 in Edina, Minnesota. Quote – "If it's a ground ball, I can field it."

10-18-1977 – REGGIE JACKSON hits three home runs on only three swings against the
LOS ANGELES DODGERS in Game Six of the World Series at YANKEE STADIUM,
in the 8-4 victory, becoming the first batter to hit five home runs in
one World Series.
10-18-1862 – JAMES CREIGHTON, who was one of baseball's first superstars, having not made an out for the entire season, averaging 4.2 runs per game, swung hard at a pitch and heard something pop so loudly that the on-deck hitter, JOHN "Death to Flying Things" CHAPMAN, heard it also. Creighton ran out the hit, thinking it was his belt that snapped, crossed home plate and collapsed. Apparently an internal organ had ruptured and he lay in agony for two days then expired at the age of 21 years, seven months and two days.
10-19-1950 – Construction begins on the site of the Story Quarry for COUNTY STADIUM, which will become the new home for the MILWAUKEE BRAVES.
10-20-1906 – Hall of Fame catcher/infielder/outfielder BUCK EWING died at the age of 47 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

10-23-1876 – THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE published season-ending batting percentages based on dividing the number of at-bats into the number of hits and ROSS BARNES is the leader with a .429 average.

10-24-1969 – One of the best minor league players in history, JACK BENTLEY, died at the age of 74 in Olney, Maryland. As a 1B/OF he posted a batting average of .358 and was 80-29 as a pitcher. In 1921 he hit for a .421 average to capture the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE batting championship and led in pitching percentage with a mound mark of 12-1.
10-24-1973 – NEW YORK METS OF/IB WILLIE MAYS announced his retirement.
10-26-1931 – CHICAGO WHITE SOX owner CHARLES COMISKEY, "The Old Roman", died at his sunmmer residence, leaving an estate of $1,529,707 to his son J. LOUIS COMISKEY.
10-26-1945 – BILL VEECK sold his controlling interest in the MILWAUKEE BREWERS of the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION for a reported $150,000 due the health of his wife Ellen and the condition of his leg, injured while he served in World War II in the USMC.
10-26-1960 – The current TEXAS RANGERS franchise originated when the AMERICAN LEAGUE awarded an expansion franchise to Washington, D.C., that followed the transfer of the original WASHINGTON SENATORS, operated by CALVIN GRIFFITH, to Minnesota after the 1960 season, with the second club operating from 1961 through 1971 before the move to Texas.

a contest to rename the team.
10-29-1953 – The ST. LOUIS BROWNS franchise was purchased by a group of Baltimore businessmen who brought the club to Baltimore and renamed it the BALTIMORE ORIOLES.
10-30-1956 – The rumors became fact when the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS announced they were pulling out of Rochester after 28 seasons. A public stock sale organized by local businessman MORRIE SILVER results in the purchase of the franchise and stadium for $525,000.
10-30-1966 – PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE pitching legend DICK "KEWPIE" BARRETT, who won 325 minor league games, plus 34 in the majors, died at the age of 60 in Seattle. He won 20 or more games seven times in eight seasons between 1935 and 1942, pitching the SEATTLE RAINIERS to three consecutive pennants.
