9-19-1972 – CESAR TOVAR was the first batter in MINNESOTA TWINS franchise history to hit for the cycle at METROPOLITAN STADIUM, in a 5-3 victory over the TEXAS RANGERS.

9-21-1958 – Left handed CHICAGO CUBS 1B DALE LONG catches in the ninth inning, utilizing a left-handed catchers mitt, in a 2-1 loss to the BROOKLYN DODGERS.

9-21-1979 – U.L. WASHINGTON hit a home run from both sides of the plate in a game for his KANSAS CITY ROYALS.

9-22-1870 – The NEW YORK MUTUALS win the 1870 Championship by defeating the ATLANTICS of BROOKLYN, 10-4 at the UNION GROUNDS. The game had such national interest that telegraph wires were strung and inning-by-inning results were sent nationwide.

9-22-1959 – The CHICAGO WHITE SOX end a 40-year pennant drought by clinching the AMERICAN LEAGUE title defeating the CLEVELAND INDIANS at CLEVELAND STADIUM.

9-22-1965 – The last game for the MILWAUKEE BRAVES at COUNTY STADIUM.

9-22-1968 – In a game against the OAKLAND ATHLETICS at METROPOLITAN STADIUM, CESAR TOVAR became only the second major leaguer ever to play all nine positions in a single game, and is also the only position player to ever be the starting pitcher in the history of the MINNESOTA TWINS, facing leadoff batter BERT CAMPANERIS, the only other man to previously perform this feat, tossing a scoreless 1st inning, including striking out REGGIE JACKSON. Around the diamond he played errorless ball, with a hit, a stolen base, scoring a run in the 2-1 win for his squad.

9-22-1971 – AMERICAN LEAGUE owners voted to transfer the WASHINGTON SENATORS franchise to Arlington, Texas for the 1972 season.

9-22-1993 – In his final MLB appearance, NOLAN RYANN became the oldest player to ever appear in a game for the TEXAS RANGERS, at the age of 46 years, 7 months and 22 days.

9-23-1845 – The NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKER baseball club is organized, inspired by ALEXANDER J. CARTWRIGHT, whose written rules distinguish his brand of baseball from other forms played throughout the country.

9-23-1939 – BROOKLYN DODGERS 3B COOKIE LAVAGETTO consecutively reached base safely 7 times in a game at the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES.

9-23-1966 – RHP PHIL REGAN won 13 consecutive games between 5-17 and 9-23-1966 for his LOS ANGELES DODGERS.

9-24-1939 – ESTEL CRABTREE hits arguably the most dramatic home run in ROCHESTER RED WINGS history, with one out away from elimination in the Governor's Cup final, hitting a three-run, game tying shot in the ninth inning against the NEWARK BEARS, winning that game and the next one to capture the title.

9-24-1944 – In Baltimore, a crowd of 32913 turned out for the semi-final game between the BALTIMORE ORIOLES and BUFFALO BISONS in MEMORIAL STADIUM, a football facility that was converted for baseball after ORIOLE PARK burned on 7-4-1944.

9-24-1954 – The MILWAUKEE BRAVES hosted both the CINCINNATI REDS and the ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, as the first game was the finish of a game two days earlier whose conclusion on a disputed double play was successfully protested by the Reds, who tied the game after the protested game's resumption, but the Braves won 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning, and then knocked off the Cards 4-2 in the regularly scheduled contest.

9-24-1968 – NEW YORK METS Manager GIL HODGES suffers a mild heart attack after a game with the ATLANTA BRAVES at FULTON COUNTY STADIUM, but is given the OK to return as skipper for 1969.

9-24-1968 – DANNY CATER was first in the franchise history of the OAKLAND ATHLETICS to steal home, against the DETROIT TIGERS.

9-24-1974 – AL KALINE doubled for his 3000TH hit in a 5-4 win for his DETROIT TIGERS over the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, becoming the first AMERICAN LEAGUE hitter to do so since TRIS SPEAKER and EDDIE COLLINS reached this plateau in 1925.

9-25-1882 – The WORCESTER BROWN STOCKINGS started a baseball tradition by hosting the PROVIDENCE GRAYS for two games while charging only one admission.

9-25-1929 – MILLER HUGGINS, who guided the NEW YORK YANKEES to their first six AL pennants and three World Championships, died of blood poisoning.

9-25-1956 – ROY CAMPANELLA caught the third no-hitter of his Baseball Hall of Fame career, as RHP SAL MAGLIE threw the final no-hitter in BROOKLYN DODGERS franchise history, downing the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, 5-0.

9-25-1965 – LEROY "SATCHEL" PAIGE, at the age of 60, became the oldest player in MLB history, taking to the mound for the KANSAS CITY ATHLETICS, and proceeding to pitch three scoreless innings over the BOSTON RED SOX, giving up only one hit, to CARL YASTRZEMSKI.

9-25-1984 – RUSTY STAUB, playing with the NEW YORK METS, became only the second player to ever hit MLB homeruns as a teenager and after his 40TH birthday, joining TY COBB.

9-26-1879 – The Hidden Ball Trick was invented by LOU SAY, then a minor league shortstop, who worked the trick for Albany in a game against Worcester for the first time on this date.

9-26-1908 – ED REULBACH becomes the first and only pitcher to hurl two shutouts on the same day as his CHICAGO CUBS down the BROOKLYN DODGERS, 5-0 and 3-0.

9-26-1961 – Under Manager FRED HUTCHINSON, the CINCINNATI REDS clinch the NATIONAL LEAGUE pennant, their last at CROSLEY FIELD.

9-26-1973 – JIM COLBORN became first 20-game winner for the MILWAUKEE BREWERS, tossing a three-hitter against the NEW YORK YANKEES, winning 5-2.

9-26-1983 – BOB FORSCH pitched a no-hitter for his ST. LOUIS CARDINALS over the MONTREAL EXPOS.

9-27-1893 – The last game for the CHICAGO COLTS at SOUTH SIDE PARK, saw them defeat the NEW YORK GIANTS, 7-2 in 8 innings.

9-27-1952 – EDDIE MATHEWS became the first rookie in MLB history to slug three homers in a game.

9-27-1964 – The last game for the HOUSTON COLT .45s is played at COLT STADIUM in Houston.

9-27-1982 – ALAN ASHBY belted a home run from both sides of the plate in a game for his HOUSTON ASTROS.

9-27-1996 – 2B ROBERTO ALOMAR, of the BALTIMORE ORIOLES, was ejected after spitting in the face of umpire JOHN HIRSCHBECK in a game against the TORONTO BLUE JAYS at SKYDOME in Toronto. MLB needed a court order to keep umpires from boycotting postseason games and infielder was suspended for five games at the start of the 1997 season.

9-28-1919 – In the fastest game ever played in the major leagues, it took the NEW YORK GIANTS only 51 minutes to down the PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES, 6-1, at the POLO GROUNDS, in a game in which the players agreed to speed up play, often swinging at the first pitch and running the bases at will.

9-28-1923 – LOU GEHRIG hit his first career home run, off BILL PIERCEY of the BOSTON RED SOX, and on the same date 15 years later, in 1938, he hit the 493RD, and last of his career regular season homers, this time off HUBERT BENJAMIN "DUTCH" LEONARD, of the WASHINGTON SENATORS.

9-28-1938 – In one of the more famous incidents in MLB history, CHICAGO CUBS C GABBY HARTNETT hit his famous "Homer in the Gloamin'" off MACE BROWN of the PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

9-28-1939 – JOHNNY NEUN was re-engaged for his third season as Manager of the NEWARK BEARS of the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE.

9-28-1953 – The ST. LOUIS BROWNS played their final game before becoming the BALTIMORE ORIOLES in 1954.

9-28-1975 – In the first of the only two games in MLB history where four pitchers have combined on a no-hitter, with both coming in the OAKLAND COLISEUM, VIDA BLUE, GLENN ABBOTT, PAUL LINDBLAD and ROLLIE FINGERS no-hit the CALIFORNIA ANGELS.

9-28-1988 – LOS ANGELES DODGERS RHP OREL HERSHISER set a consecutive shutout innings mark by pitching 59 innings of shutout ball between 8-30 and 9-28-1988, still a MLB record.

9-28-2000 – SEAN CASEY, of the CINCINNATI REDS, hit the final home run off the MILWAUKEE BREWERS in the last game at COUNTY STADIUM in Milwaukee.

9-28-1878 – WILL WHITE of Cincinnati downs Cleveland 13-1, his 74TH complete game of the season, then goes on to finish with 75 and 680 innings pitched, establishing these unbreakable MLB season records.

9-29-1879 – The first reserve system was implemented, established to prevent players from signing two or more contracts, then choosing which one they'd honor, served baseball well, giving the fans and owners consistency.

9-29-1920 – The CINCINNATI REDS 1919 title is tarnished by the eight members of the CHICAGO WHITE SOX who are suspended for allegedly "throwing" the Series. Cincinnati insisted its club would have won no matter what, while the 1919 WHITE SOX team are derisively nicknamed the "BLACK SOX" from that point onward.

9-29-1935 – ELDEN AUKER allowed the most singles in an inning, 10, a DETROIT TIGERS franchise record, at the CHICAGO WHITE SOX.

9-29-1957 – The final game played at the POLO GROUNDS saw the NEW YORK GIANTS go down in defeat to the visiting PITTSBURGH PIRATES, 9-1.

9-29-1971 – In the sixth inning of the MONTREAL EXPOS 6-5 victory against the CHICAGO CUBS, MILT PAPPAS hit RON HUNT with a pitch, the 50TH HBP for him on the season, still a MLB record.

9-29-1973 – SAN DIEGO PADRES 3B DAVE ROBERTS hit the first inside-the-park home run at SAN DIEGO STADIUM against the LOS ANGELES DODGERS.

9-29-1987 – NEW YORK YANKEES 1B DON MATTINGLY hit a grand slam off BRUCE HURST of the BOSTON RED SOX setting a MLB record with six grand slams in a season.

9-29-1988 – OREL HERSHISER, in his last start of the season, pitches 10 shutout innings against the SAN DIEGO PADRES, to extend his continuous scoreless inning streak to 59. However, as he did not finish the game, his streak stops at five straight shutouts, leaving the long-standing LOS ANGELES DODGERS record set by DON DRYSDALE intact at six consecutive shutouts.

9-29-2000 – In a 100-minute ceremony, hosted by BOB UECKER, the MILWAUKEE BREWERS pay tribute to their fans on the final day for COUNTY STADIUM with some of the great stars of the past, like HENRY AARON, WARREN SPAHN, ROLLIE FINGERS and ROBIN YOUNT.

9-29-2002 – One of the truly great radio voices, LON SIMMONS, 79, of the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS retired after over 44 years in the booth. He started with the Giants in 1958 when they arrived in San Francisco from New York, spending 19 seasons, 13 in partnership with the late RUSS HODGES, before heading across the bay in 1981 to work with the OAKLAND ATHLETICS, leaving them in 1995 to return to the Giants for 1996. In 2004 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in the announcers category.

9-30-1878 – NATIONAL LEAGUE owners agree to "reserve" 5 players with whom the other clubs may not negotiate, thus the beginning of the reserve system begins.

9-30-1927 – BABE RUTH breaks his own MLB record with his 60TH home run on the season's final day.

9-30-1956 – The youngest pitcher to start a MLB game was sixteen-year-old JIM DERRINGTON, for the CHICAGO WHITE SOX.

9-30-1970 – "The Mad Russian", LOU NOVIKOFF, a former slugging outfielder in the majors and minors, died at the age of 54 in South Gate, California. For the LOS ANGELES ANGELS he had his greatest season in 1940, leading the PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE in home runs with 40, 171 runs batted in, going with a .363 average.

9-30-1971 – The final game for the WASHINGTON SENATORS is forfeited to the NEW YORK YANKEES when fans stream onto the field with two outs in the ninth inning with the Senators leading, 7-5.

9-30-1972 – TED WILLIAMS retires from managing the TEXAS RANGERS and WHITEY HERXZOG is named as his replacement.

9-30-1976 – SEATTLE MARINERS purchase their first player, RHP DAVE JOHNSON, from the BALTIMORE ORIOLES.

9-30-1980 – OAKLAND ATHLETICS OF RICKEY HENDERSON set the AMERICAN LEAGUE single-season stolen base record with his 97TH in a 5-1 win over the CHICAGO WHITE SOX, breaking the long-standing mark of 96 set by TY COBB in 1915, finishing the season with a total of 100 SBs.

9-30-1984 – RHP MIKE WITT became the 13TH pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game for his CALIFORNIA ANGELS over the TEXAS RANGERS in the last game of the regular season.

9-30-1990 – The final game at old COMISKEY PARK sees the CHICAGO WHITE SOX edge the SEATTLE MARINERS, 2-1, with a final regular season won-loss record of 3024-2926 (.508).

9-30-1992 – GEORGE BRETT of the KANSAS CITY ROYALS got his 3000TH hit off TIM FORTUGNO of the CALIFORNIA ANGELS.

9-30-1998 – DANIEL RAYMOND QUISENBERRY died at the age of only 45 in Leawood, Kansas, having suffered from a form of brain cancer. He led the AMERICAN LEAGUE in saves four times, including a record-setting 45 in 1983, followed by 44 in 1984 and was five times awarded THE SPORTING NEWS Fireman of the Year Award.

9-30-1999 – The final game was played at 3COM PARK, formerly CANDLESTICK PARK as the LOS ANGELES DODGERS defeated the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS, 9-4.
